All the way to the top with Peter Sagan - is the plan working? With the Slovakian three-time world champion, the team has made its biggest transfer to date and has significantly changed the team and equipment according to Sagan's wishes. The French are thus breaking new ground and positioning themselves more internationally.
The change of course has not paid off in terms of results so far, especially as Sagan has hardly performed at all following another Covid infection. Nevertheless, TotalEnergies is going into the season with a broad chest. Tour de France: "Sagan is the best sprinter for the tough finales. If the pure sprinters get left behind on the smaller climbs, he's there," says team boss Jean-Rene Bernaudeau. Sagan and Anthony Turgis should strike on the cobbles around Arenberg.
After that, all eyes will be on the Frenchman Pierre Latour, who should be back in top form after health problems. The classics skier also has a mental problem behind him: after crashing, he had problems on downhill runs. "We trained with him on skis during the winter to make him more confident and self-assured on the downhill," reveals Bernaudeau. Now Latour should finally show that he is more than just a talent.

What's going on with Peter Sagan? It's not just the Slovakian press that is puzzling over the situation of the national hero, who has been lagging behind his form for months. Speculation about Long-Covid made the rounds after Sagan's renewed infection with the coronavirus.
Team boss Bernaudeau hopes that he will be in winning form for the Tour and enthuses about the human qualities of his star: "He has a great personality. He loves the fun and the spectacle. He can inspire everyone and spreads enthusiasm."
Sagan has changed the spirit of the team, they say at TotalEnergies, and the world champion himself publicly thanked the team for their support and patience. In sporting terms, a question mark remains: Sagan's last of a total of twelve Tour stage wins dates back to 2019 - can he celebrate again?
18 of the 22 teams competing in the Tour de France 2022 have a World Tour licence, which means they are both entitled and obliged to take part in the Tour of France. Four teams belong to the Professional Continental Teams, the second division of international cycling.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck and Arkea-Samsic teams qualified as the two best teams in this category last year; the two French teams B&B Hotels-KTM and TotalEnergies received a wildcard from Tour organiser ASO. With eight participants per team, the 2022 Tour de France peloton will comprise a total of 176 riders.
