The route of the Vuelta 2024 in detail

The route presentation at the Marriott Auditorium Hotel in Madrid was accompanied and commented on by the two Spanish cycling stars Alejandro Valverde, who ended his career in 2022, and Carlos Rodriguez, who last finished fifth in the 2023 Tour de France.

Although the route of the Vuelta 2024 does not take the riders through the Pyrenees, it is - as is typical for the tour - mountainous. There are a total of nine mountain finishes, and race weeks two and three are particularly tough in terms of climbs.

Start in Portugal

The first three stages all take place in Portugal and are on flat to hilly terrain. Back in Spain, the first mountain finish on the Pico Villuercas awaits on the fourth day of the race. The riders then head to the south of the country, where the first week of the race ends with a tough mountain stage in the Sierra Nevada in Granada, Andalusia.

Final of the second race week at Cuitu Negru

After a rest day, the riders continue in Galicia, not far from the Portuguese border. The second week of the race is characterised by difficult mountain top finishes. Over the course of four days, the peloton must first tackle the mountain station of Mazaneda and the Puerto de Ancares - two 1st category climbs - before the Cuitu Negru, one of the toughest climbs of the tour, follows at the end of the week.

Vuelta a Espana 2024: Time trial as the finale in Madrid

The final week of the Vuelta 2024 begins as the previous one ended: The tough finish of the 16th stage at Lagos de Covadonga in the north of the country could create further gaps in the overall classification. The penultimate stage then includes another seven categorised climbs before the Tour of Spain concludes with an individual time trial in Madrid. The last time the Vuelta ended in a time trial was in 2002.
