The 13th stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2024 starts in the Galician city of Lugo. The two climbs Alto Campo de Arbre and Alto O Portelo lead to a flatter section before the finale. It starts with the intermediate sprint in Sesamo and the Puerto de Llumeras climb, before the mountain finish follows. It goes up to the Puerto de Ancares - a 1st category climb. This is the second mountain finish in a row after the 12th stage with the finish at the mountain station in Manzaneda.
Although the mountain finish of the 13th stage is significantly shorter than the climb to the Manzaneda mountain station, it is much steeper. The last 4.6 kilometres of the Puerto de Ancares have an average gradient of over 12 per cent and are therefore extremely demanding. The mountain pass lies at 1669 metres at the finish and forms the border between the provinces of Galicia and Castile and Leon.
On the 13th stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2024, the classification riders are likely to decide the day's victory among themselves. Although there are three mountain classifications before the final climb, the route profile includes long flat sections in between, so the peloton should be able to control potential breakaways. On the extremely steep final climb, the breakaway riders should be caught at the latest and the classification riders should take command. A climbing specialist should then break away in the final kilometres and celebrate the day's victory.
Due to the difficulty of the mountain finish, gaps in the overall classification are to be expected. Particularly on the difficult final section, there are likely to be some clear gaps and the overall classification will continue to level out. The climb up to the Puerto de Ancares is therefore one of the key sections of the Tour of Spain.
The neutral start will take place at 12:55. Around 12 minutes later, kilometre 0 will be reached. The finish is expected at 17:17 with an average speed of 42 km/h, 17:30 at 40 km/h and 17:44 at 38 km/h.
