It's off to Andalusia, more precisely to Seville - one of the largest cities in Spain. However, the 5th stage starts in Fuente del Maestre. This is located around 200 kilometres south-west of Pico Villuerca, the finish of stage 4, in the autonomous community of Extremadura. From the start, the route heads south for most of the day without any major detours. The stage does not have a single mountain classification, which is a rarity at the Vuelta a Espana 2024.
The first 70 kilometres are undulating, then it tends to be slightly downhill until kilometre 150, with a few exceptions. The last 25 kilometres to the finish are then almost flat as a board.
After the mountain stage the day before, there is another chance for the sprinters here. Incidentally, the fifth stage is also the only stage in the Tour of Spain 2024 that the organisers have officially designated as "flat". The few fast men will not miss this opportunity.
There are good opportunities for a breakaway group to break away on the initially slightly profiled course. But on the almost flat roads towards Seville, the attackers will have a very difficult time against a chasing peloton.
The neutral start will take place at 13:25. Around ten minutes later, kilometre 0 should be reached. The finish is expected at 17:19 with an average speed of 47 km/h, 17:30 with 45 km/h and 17:40 with 43 km/h.
