Vuelta 2024: Stage 6 - route, elevation profile and map

Stage 6 of the Vuelta a Espana 2024 starts in an unusual place: a Carrefour supermarket in Jerez de la Frontera. The shop chain is a long-standing sponsor of the Tour of Spain and, as a special goodie, will be welcoming the peloton to one of its branches on stage 6. After the riders have left the sausage, cheese and sweets counters behind them, they head out of Jerez de la Frontera, which is around 90 kilometres south of Seville, the finish of stage 5.

The route leads eastwards for almost the entire day and includes some topographical difficulties. It starts with the Puerto del Boyar (1st category), the summit of which is reached at kilometre 73.4. The climb is 14.7 kilometres long with an average gradient of 5.5 percent.

After the descent and an undulating section, the Puerto del Viento (3rd category) awaits with 6.6 kilometres and 4.3 per cent on average. The last 40 kilometres or so from El Burgo are ridden on a large loop. There, the riders first have to tackle the Puerto Martinez (3rd category) - 3.5 kilometres with 6.3 per cent, before the final climb to the Alto de las Abejas (3rd category) awaits. At 8.9 kilometres and an average gradient of 3.9 percent, this is a classic roller climb that is ridden with the large chainring.

Sporting assessment of the 6th stage

Stage 6 is listed in the Vuelta road book with 3580 metres of climbing. The majority of this is in the middle section. The finale - especially the final climb - is not difficult enough for the classification riders to be able to do anything against the competition. The top riders in the overall standings will try to conserve their energy.

It should be a day for the breakaway riders, who will find ideal terrain here. However, if you want to hold your own in the breakaway group and distance yourself from your rivals, you should have a certain amount of mountain strength.
