Primoz Roglic's fourth overall victory at the Vuelta a Espana is within his grasp after a gala performance by him and his Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team. The Slovenian won after 173.2 kilometres between Logrono and the Alto de Moncalvillo, outsprinting the entire competition in the process.
Second on stage 19 was David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), 46 seconds behind, ahead of Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), who crossed the finish line at the same time as the Frenchman, with Enric Mas (Movistar) four seconds behind. Ben O'Connor, the previous wearer of the red jersey, lost 1:49 minutes and is now in second place 1:54 minutes behind Roglic.
Tomorrow is another big stage. That will be super tough and then there's the time trial in Madrid. It's far from over - Primoz Roglic
Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe stepped up the pace massively right at the start of the final climb. Daniel Felipe Martinez and Aleksandr Vlasov rode away from all the other rivals with Roglic on their rear wheel.
Five kilometres from the finish, Vlasov dropped out and Roglic rode the rest of the route alone, taking his third stage win of the 2024 Tour of Spain in outstanding style. His team-mate Florian Lipowitz finished tenth and retains his eighth place in the overall standings.
It took around 40 kilometres before the day's breakaway group was able to break away from the peloton. There were five riders: Edward Planckaert (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Fran Miholjevic (Bahrain-Victorious), Vito Braet, Simone Petilli (both Intermarche-Wanty) and Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates). The group's maximum lead was around five minutes.
Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe and Movistar took the peloton on the windward edge after the Puerto de Pradilla (3rd category). For a short time, there were several stacks, but in the end everything came together again. The race situation remained stable until the start of the final climb. Led by Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, the peloton continued to catch up. Miholjevic was the last breakaway rider to be caught by the peloton at the start of the final climb. Then the German team put on a sporting firework display.
With a massive increase in speed, Primoz Roglic's men caught the entire competition on the wrong foot. Six kilometres before the finish, Primoz Roglic was alone at the front with Daniel Felipe Martinez and Aleksandr Vlasov. Martinez rode into the red zone and dropped back. Five kilometres before the finish, Vlasov's job was also done. The Russian dropped Roglic at the front with a lead of 30 seconds.
Behind him, Enric Mas (Movistar) set off in pursuit and initially held off the competition. The Spaniard came within 20 seconds of Roglic before losing ground. Shortly before the finish, Mas was even overtaken by David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek).
This all happened when Roglic had long since had his victory in the bag. The captain of the Raubling-based racing team now has a comfortable cushion of almost two minutes on Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) into the queen stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2024 to Picon Blanco on Saturday.
