As in 2024, when the Vuelta a Espana began in Lisbon in Portugal, there will once again be a foreign start to the Tour of Spain next year. The first three stages will all be held in Piedmont in Italy. This was announced on Monday at an event in Turin by the local mayor Stefano Lo Russo, Alberto Cirio, President of the Piedmont Region, Marina Chiarelli, Councillor for Tourism, Culture and Sport in the Piedmont Region and Vuelta boss Javier Guillen. Accordingly, there will be a flat stage at the start, a mountain arrival and a hilly stage. The start location of stage 4, Susa, has also been announced.
For the Vuelta a Espana, it will be the sixth foreign start in total, after the Grand Tour has already made guest appearances in Lisbon (Portugal/1997), Assen (Netherlands/2009), Nimes (France/2017), Utrecht (Netherlands/2022) and Lisbon (Portugal/2024). For 2026, the Start in Monaco fixed.
On the first day of the Vuelta a Espana 2025, a sprinter is likely to secure the overall leader's red jersey. On paper, the 183 kilometres to Novara are predestined for a bunch finish.
In contrast to the Tour de France 2025where the big mountains only await in the second week, the Vuelta already has a mountain finish on the second day and thus a first test of strength for the classification riders.
The third day of the Tour of Spain is short and sweet. A constant up and down awaits on the 139 kilometres. The uphill final kilometres towards Ceres offer opportunities for classification riders and puncheurs.
The complete course of the Vuelta a Espana 2025 is to be unveiled on 19 December 2024. The route presentation will take place from 19:00 at the IFEMA Palacio Municipal in the Spanish capital Madrid.
