The Vuelta a Espana 2024 enters its final three stages. The race remains in northern Spain for stages 19 and 20. The start of stage 19 is in Logrono, the capital of the province and autonomous community of La Rioja with a population of 150,000. From the national park of Izki, the arrival point of the previous day, it is only around 30 kilometres to Logrono.

The first part of the stage is not particularly demanding. The peloton takes on around 90 kilometres before tackling the Puerto de Pradilla (3rd category). The climb is 5.2 kilometres with an average gradient of 4.8 per cent. This is followed by a descent and, from Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a counter-hill before the undulating route continues and the final climb to the Alto de Moncalvillo begins at kilometre 164.6. It's a tough one: 8.6 kilometres with an average gradient of 8.9 per cent. At the top, there are ramps of up to 16 per cent.

Sporting assessment of the 19th stage

The Vuelta a Espana has been a guest on the Alto de Moncalvillo once before: in 2020 on stage 8. Back then, Primoz Roglic and Richard Carapaz fought a thrilling battle for the red jersey. Roglic overtook the Ecuadorian on the final kilometre and pulled out a 13-second lead over his rival. In the end, the Slovenian won the Tour of Spain 2020.

Four years later, we will probably see the best of the overall classification at the front again at Moncalvillo. It's the penultimate chance in the mountains. However, there will probably be no attack from far away, but an exchange of blows on the last steep kilometres.
