The Vuelta a Espana traditionally ends in Madrid again this year. However, not with a mass start stage, as in previous years, but with an individual time trial over around 25 kilometres. The riders start in the north of the Spanish capital and finish in the centre.

After the start, the first few kilometres are a little twisty with several roundabouts and a 180-degree turn. The middle section is less technical. This is where the strong rouleurs should be able to show off their power before another 180-degree turn two kilometres before the finish at the Plaza Emperador Carlos V. The riders take the last 90-degree bend at the 800-metre mark at Plaza de Cibeles. The finish line is in the Gran Via.

There will be two intermediate timing points along the way: one after 7.9 kilometres, the second at kilometre 14.1.

Sporting assessment of the 21st stage

The Vuelta a Espana traditionally arrives in Madrid - as it always has in the last 20 years, with the exception of 2014 and 2021, when the race finished in Santiago de Compostela. In both years, an individual time trial was on the programme. It was won by Adriano Malori in 2014 and Primoz Roglic in 2021. However, the course in both years was not comparable to that of 2024 in Madrid - in 2014 the time trial was only 9.7 kilometres long, in 2021 it was a very hilly course over 33.8 kilometres.

Similar to the Tour de France, which also ended with a time trial in Nice this year, the battle for the red jersey should already be decided after countless days in the mountains at this Vuelta. Should the overall standings still be tight, a good time trialist can easily make up another minute on a pure climber on this course.
