On the first rest day, the Vuelta a Espana 2024 will set off from Andalusia in the south to Galicia in the north-west. The riders will be hoping for cooler temperatures not far from the Atlantic coast than in the south of Spain. The tenth stage will start in Ponteareas, a town with 23,000 inhabitants in the province of Pontevedra, around 30 kilometres east of Vigo.
The stage is characterised by a climb shortly after the start and one shortly before the finish. Leaving Ponteareas, the route initially heads east, and after twelve kilometres the climb to the Alto de Fonfria (2nd category) begins. The climb is 15.4 kilometres with an average gradient of 4.2 per cent.
After the crest, the route branches off briefly to the south before heading south-west from Arbo at kilometre 50 to the Atlantic coast for the stage finale. After a flat start, the riders have to tackle three more climbs over the last 60 kilometres. First the Alto de Vilachan (3rd category - 6.3 kilometres with an average gradient of 5.5 per cent), then the Alto de Mabia (2nd category - six kilometres with an average gradient of 5.7 per cent) and finally the Alto de Mougas (1st category). There it is another 9.9 kilometres with an average of six per cent. The steepest ramp of 15 per cent awaits shortly after the start of the climb, before levelling off slightly at two to six per cent in the upper section. The day's finish in Baiona is reached after the descent from the Alto de Mougas and a short flat section.
After the first rest day of the Vuelta a Espana 2024, 3047 metres of climbing await the riders. There won't be much time to roll in, as the road starts to climb again after just a few kilometres. The Alto de Fonfria offers attackers the opportunity to form a strong breakaway group early on in the stage. This should then also determine the rest of the day. The contenders for the red jersey are unlikely to make an appearance. The Alto de Mougas is not difficult enough for an attack by a classification rider and there is also a risky descent on the way to the finish.
The neutral start will take place at 13:30. The sharp start is scheduled for 13:42. The finish is expected at 17:19 with an average speed of 44 km/h, 17:30 with 42 km/h and 17:41 with 40 km/h.
