Stage 8 offers ideal terrain for breakaways, but could also bring out the best in the classification. After a short, flat start, the route leads the riders into the mountains of Teramo and Piceno. The first highlight awaits on the ride over the Sassotetto (Valico di Santa Maria Maddalena) at an altitude of 1465 metres. A technically demanding descent is followed by a series of climbs and descents that give the riders no respite. The finale is challenging: the route first climbs up to Castel Santa Maria, where gradients of 12 to 13 per cent await over two kilometres. The route then leads over narrow roads to Matelica and Gagliole. 6.5 kilometres before the finish, an 800-metre long ramp with a gradient of over 12 per cent awaits, followed by a technical descent. A sharp right-hand bend 400 metres before the finish leads to the slightly uphill finishing straight.

The elevation profile of stage 8 leaves no doubt that it will be a very demanding day. The best chances are likely to be for the breakaway riders. The classification riders could also show themselves. The long climb to Sassotetto in the first half of the stage will be the first selection. The constant ups and downs in the further course and especially the difficult finale with the short, steep climbs will tire the riders' legs even more. The sprinters are unlikely to play a role. Breakaway groups have a good chance of getting through, as it is difficult to control the race on this terrain. The decisive factor will be who organises their strength best and still has reserves in the finale.
