The first individual time trial leads through the vineyards of Burgundy - a test of strength between the Tour favourites. All of them, Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic and of course Remco Evenepoel, are really strong individual time trialists who shouldn't have any major problems with this stage. All of them will also be going full gas today, because a victory on this day is important. But by that I mean more of a moral importance than a strategic one. The gaps between the best riders - without any major incidents - won't be that big. The strength profiles are simply too similar for that. It's more about seconds.
If you look at the history of the Tour in recent years, the gaps between the first riders at the end of the tours have been rather enormous. That speaks in favour of the constant effect of superiority. The exception is the 2020 race, but the individual time trial was also structured completely differently. The course of this stage, which is not particularly long, is not very technical overall. Before entering the only real climb of the day, I see a deceptive bend, as does the descent after just under 14 kilometres, but otherwise I don't think the course is problematic. It will also appeal to real time trial specialists such as Stefan Küng as a suitable opportunity to win a stage.
As a racer with a great overview, Rolf Aldag was a bank for successful Tour teams and supported Bjarne Riis and Jan Ullrich in their victories in France. As a sports manager and sporting director, the Westphalian is also one of the most respected representatives in the industry. He is also planning the Tour de France mission again in 2024 with the newly named Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team. As in previous years, Aldag has once again focussed exclusively on this year's Tour for TOUR readers.
The 55-year-old has looked at the dramaturgy of the route planners and gone into detail to assess the possible course of the individual stages. In this work, he reflects on which constellations are likely in the race and which riders are likely to have particular hopes - or worries - on which stages. He also includes his view on innovations and trends in the business. In addition, Aldag provides a compact overview of the relevance of each stage for the classification. He assigns zero to three jerseys per classification: for the overall classification (yellow jersey), the points classification for the best sprinters (green jersey) and the Tour's mountain classification (dotted jersey). In this way, Rolf Aldag's forecast offers added value every day.
