Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
The start of the 2025 spring classics on the so-called "Opening Weekend" in Flanders. Cobblestones and short but steep climbs characterise Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The weather also has a decisive influence: temperatures in the single digits or just above freezing and rain are common.

Day two of the "Opening Weekend", but only for the men, the women have Omloop van het Hageland as the second part of the "Opening Weekend". Unlike Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne is not part of the World Tour, the highest racing series in professional cycling, but is a league below it in the Pro Series. In 2025, the riders face 13 slip roads, the last of which is 59 kilometres before the finish, leaving enough time for the sprinters to catch up with any leading group.

Strade Bianche, organised by RCS, the creators of the Giro d'Italia, is described by the organisers as "Europe's southernmost northern classic". Known for its gravel sections on the characteristic "white roads" of Tuscany, the race has already unofficially achieved the status of the sixth monument of the season for many cycling fans.

Even before Milan-San Remo, the programme includes Milan-Turin 2025, the oldest one-day race still in existence today - first held in 1876. This year, the finish line will once again be on the Superga above Turin, as it once was. This means that the climbers are likely to decide the victory among themselves this year.

Ride into spring, la Primavera, is the name of the race, which is also the first cycling monument of 2025. Milan-San Remo now starts in Pavia and not in Milan, which is further north. This year, the men's route measures 289 kilometres - after the ride over the Turchino Pass to the Mediterranean, the route runs along the coast via the Via Aurelia and, in the finale, over the well-known Cipressa and Poggio climbs. For the first time in 20 years, there will be a race for women again this year, officially named "Sanremo Women". The last winner for the time being was Trixi Worrack from Erfurt.

Probably the most sprinter-friendly race among the most important one-day events of the 2025 Spring Classics, the biggest opponent around De Panne is the wind. Both the men and the women ride the completely flat race on the North Sea coast, the men on Wednesday, the women one day later.

The E3 Saxo Classic marks the start of the hot phase of the Flemish classics season, which culminates nine days later with the Tour of Flanders. The spring classic shares some sections with the Ronde, making it a kind of mini Tour of Flanders. The E3 Prijs first took place in 1958 and was named after the E3 motorway, which runs from Harelbeke to Antwerp and is now known as the A14.

Gent-Wevelgem is characterised by a special cobblestone climb: the Kemmelberg. This is not only cycled several times, but also from different sides. The Belvedère side measures 1500 metres and has an average gradient of 6.6 percent. From the direction of Ossuaire, the climb is even steeper at 10.4 per cent, but shorter at 700 metres. This is where the preliminary decision is often made. Will a single rider or a small group manage to break away in this spring classic in 2025 or will there be a bunch sprint at the end?

Dwars door Vlaanderen combines the typical Flemish elements like no other spring classic in 2025. The race is characterised by cobblestones and steep climbs, while the wind can always cause a hectic atmosphere in the peloton. It is the last opportunity to test yourself again shortly before the Tour of Flanders, albeit on a shorter route.

Times have changed at the Tour of Flanders: since the organisers of Flanders Classics added a spectator-friendly final lap to the course, a new type of winner has established itself. Where cycling heavyweights such as Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara once fought duels, it is now uphill riders such as Tadej Pogačar who win the race - he used the longest ascent on the Oude Kwaremont two years ago for a solo escape and victory. What remains: The race is still called "Flanders' most beautiful" and Belgium's biggest road festival and one of the most important spring classics of 2025 will take place on the edge of the rough route over steep stitches ("Hellingen") and cobblestones.

It's a ride through hell - Paris-Roubaix is considered the most painful of the legendary one-day races in cycling. The race has been held for men since 1896 and for women since 2021. The up to 55 kilometres of cobblestones demand everything from man and machine. The finish on the concrete oval in the dusty Roubaix velodrome is also unique.

Date: 12 April 2025
Start: Denain
Target: Roubaix
Route length: 148.5 km, 17 pavé sectors, 29.2 kilometres of cobblestones

The competition in the Limburg hill country is relatively young, first organised for men in 1966. 35 years later, the women got their Ladies Edition. The wind on the treeless hilltops and steep stretches such as Keutenberg and Cauberg offer a rollercoaster ride that separates the wheat from the chaff in the peloton.
The Flèche Wallonne, also known as the Walloon Arrow, is traditionally held on the Wednesday between the Amstel Gold Race and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The short climbs (Côtes) in the Ardennes thin out the peloton. The decision is traditionally made on the super steep Mur de Huy with peaks of over 20 per cent.

La Doyenne - the race is the old lady of the classics: since 1892, cyclists have been competing on the loop from Liège to Bastogne and back again - over a number of climbs in the Belgian Ardennes. It is not only the oldest, but topographically also the most demanding of the spring classics. The men have to conquer 4405 metres in altitude. For the women, who have had their own race at "LBL" since 2017, there are 2750 metres of elevation gain between the start in Bastogne and Liège.

The cycling classic on 1 May is the most important German one-day race alongside the Cyclassics in Hamburg in August and also marks the end of the major spring classics in 2025. The route, which leads via Eschborn through the Taunus mountains over the Großer Feldberg and Mammolshainer, offers chances of victory for puncheurs and hill-hard sprinters.
