In 2025, the race will once again start in Oudenaarde, where the finish line is also located, as it has been since the first edition in 2004. A total of 168.8 kilometres are to be covered, around five kilometres more than last year. The route includes twelve slip roads and seven cobbled sections.
Just like the men, the women also take a bit of a run-up before the difficulties begin. The first 55 kilometres or so are not particularly demanding. Then the first cobblestones are encountered in the Doorn passage. Ten kilometres later, the first slip road follows with the Edalereberg, followed shortly afterwards by number two: the Wolvenberg. The peloton now takes three cobbled sectors in quick succession: Holleweg, Karel Martelstraat and Jagerij. Then it's on to Molenberg and Paddestraat, before the Berendries after around 100 kilometres, followed by the Valkenberg and, after a further ten kilometres or so, the Eikenberg.
Afterwards, the dreaded Koppenberg is also on the programme for the 2025 Tour of Flanders for women. The favourites should definitely stay at the front in the narrow hollow lane. There was a lot of chaos there in 2024, with many riders having to dismount and push on the slippery cobbles. There are still around 45 kilometres to go from the Koppenberg to the finish. Via Mariaborrestraat, Steenbeekdries, Stationsberg, Taaienberg and Hotond, the riders reach what are probably the two decisive climbs: Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg. This combination only has to be tackled once by the women - twice for the men - but it should be selective enough to decide the race once and for all. From the Paterberg, which is up to 20 per cent steep, there are still around 14 kilometres to the finish.
Last year, Elisa Longo Borghini stormed to her second victory in the Tour of Flanders after 2015 in a sprint ahead of Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Shirin van Anrooij. The 33-year-old Italian is therefore aiming for success number three this year, which would make her the sole record holder. The signs for this are very good. During the week, Longo Borghini rode away from everyone at the Tour of Flanders and celebrated an impressive solo victory. The captain of UAE Team ADQ is therefore the woman to beat. Normally, world champion Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx - Protime) would be mentioned in the same breath as Longo Borghini. But the Belgian, who could also win the Ronde for the third time, still has sand in her gears ahead of her home race - her performance on Wednesday at Quer durch Flandern was not convincing despite finishing second in the end. Especially as the SD Worx - Protime team has two more trump cards up its sleeve: Comeback rider Anna van der Breggen has already won the 2018 Ronde and showed herself to be in good form at the start of the season. And then the Dutch racing team also has a Lorena Wiebes in top form, who recently won her first victory at Gent-Wevelgem. 100th victory. The Tour of Flanders should normally be too difficult for the sprinter Wiebes, but in her current condition she could go very far on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Tour de France Femmes winner Niewiadoma will be flying the flag for the German team CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto. The Polish rider's form is good, but her handicap remains that she would probably have to arrive alone due to her sprint deficits. Marlen Reusser (Movistar) is likely to try something similar. The Swiss rider is returning to the race in which she crashed heavily last year and will form a double lead-out together with Liane Lippert. Normally, the Friedrichshafen rider's races only come at the Ardennes Classics, but with sixth place at Quer durch Flandern she proved that she is also a force to be reckoned with at the Ronde. Puck Pieterse (Fenix - Deceuninck) should also be on your radar. The 22-year-old was the only rider at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad who was able to keep up with Demi Vollering on the Hellingen. Vollering is skipping the Tour of Flanders, but her team FDJ - SUEZ is sending Elise Chabbey into the race instead. Letizia Borghesi, Noemi Rüegg (both EF Education-Oatly), Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and her team-mate Marianne Vos, who has been struggling recently, are also among the contenders for a top place.
