The 2023 Tour of the Basque Country (official name Itzulia Basque Country) is part of the UCI World Tour and, alongside the Tour of Catalonia, is the most important one-week stage race in Spain. The Itzulia is characterised by short, steep climbs and the cycling-crazy Basque fans who turn the tour into a unique spectacle every year.
Photo: Getty Velo The Basque cycling fans stand guard on the climbs The Tour of the Basque Country was first held in 1924, but there was a long break between the 1935 edition and the restart in 1969, during which the race did not take place. Since then, it has been held every year with the exception of 2020, when the race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The organiser is the OCETA sports association, which also organises the Clasica San Sebastian and the Women's Tour of the Basque Country.
Tour of the Basque Country: Klöden the only German winner In 2022, the Colombian Daniel Felipe Martinez triumphed for the Ineos Grenadiers team. The record winners are the Spaniards Jose Antonio Gonzalez and Alberto Contador with four victories each. Andreas Klöden is the only German to have won the tough stage race twice, in 2000 and 2011.
