The Danish professional cyclist from Jumbo-Visma won the 162.8 kilometre section between the towns of Errenteria and Amasa-Villabona with a two second lead over the Spaniards Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) and Enric Mas (Movistar). In the overall lead, Vingegaard finished five seconds ahead of Landa in second place.
"It's one of my favourite races," said the 26-year-old Vingegaard after the day's victory on Eurosport. He hopes to be able to stay in the leader's jersey from now on. "Even if I lose the jersey again, I will still fight for it," emphasised Vingegaard.
The day before Dutchman Ide Schelling from the Team Bora-Hansgrohe took the stage win and the overall lead for the time being. The final stage of the tour takes place on Saturday around Eibar.
