30-year-old Nico Denz sat for around 87 hours (!), who was one of a total of eight German riders at the Tour de France 2024in France on the Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8, which differs in nuances from the equipment used by his team colleagues. We have already photographed Denz' racer at the Grand Depart in Florence. Back then, he started with a 54/41, 10-33 tooth gear ratio. Like all professionals, the two-time Giro stage winner naturally adapts his set-up to the respective stage profile. As the race progressed, Denz also opted for the larger chainring combination with 56/43 teeth on his SRAM Red AXS.

Impressive weight of the Specialised

The S-Works frameset of the Tarmac SL 8 serves as the basis. Complete wheel weight of Primoz Roglic's bike - and that was impressive at 6.8 kilograms. The Slovenian, who has already departed after his crash, rides a slightly smaller frame than Denz, which is why his bike is likely to be somewhat heavier. At the same time, however, it is still one of the lightest bikes in the peloton.

The 1.83 metre tall Denz compensates for the slightly too short frame with a slightly longer stem on his one-piece cockpit from Roval. Small Sprinter shifters are hidden in the handlebar arch.

When choosing his tyres, the Tour debutant opts for the Turbo RapidAir from Specialized. The rubber scored points in our large tyre test with good comfort, but also develops a life of its own that takes some getting used to when turning. Denz certainly doesn't seem to mind. Most of his team-mates opt for the faster Turbo Cotton.
