The mix-up in the jersey issue remained hidden from Mas even during some stages of the Giro d'Italia. "I'm wearing a size small jersey," the Spaniard told L'Equipe. "Maybe something got mixed up when the clothes were issued. Someone must have made a mistake, we don't know who, but it doesn't matter." Team-mate Iván García Cortina drew his attention to the mix-up on Saturday evening.
Enric Mas didn't notice the wrong "Women's WorldTour" label, partly because the jersey fitted as expected. "I didn't check it, I just rode with it," he said. "Everything was my size, the shorts were my size. The only difference was the logo." It was only when García Cortina pointed it out to him on Saturday evening that the mix-up became obvious. "I just didn't notice it on the bike," said Mas. "We laughed a lot when we realised it."
From stage 9 in Cervia, Enric Mas wore the team's correct men's jersey again. As much as the Spaniard was able to laugh about the jersey mix-up, he did not sporty at the Giro to laugh about. He is currently 28th in the overall standings, almost 14 minutes behind leader Afonso Eulálio. As Movistar's GC hopeful, the first week went anything but according to plan, especially as the Spaniard had announced his great ambitions for the Tour of Italy in advance. His goal was the podium of the Tour.
