The Giro d'Italia 2026 made its final detour into the mountains in the Carnic Alps. Before this stage, there was hardly any doubt about Jonas Vingegaard's (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) overall victory. The Dane finally confirmed his exceptional position in this Giro with victory after 200 kilometres at the mountain arrival in Piancavallo.
After the 14.5 per cent steep final climb, Vingegaard crossed the finish line 1:15 minutes ahead of a trio of chasers. It was his fifth stage win in this Tour of Italy. Second place on the stage went to Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) in a sprint ahead of Jai Hindley (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) and Derek Gee-West (Lidl - Trek).
Eleven kilometres before the finish, Vingegaard launched a decisive attack on the final climb when his last team-mate dropped out of the tempo work. The competition was unable to follow, so Vingegaard quickly built up a lead and caught up with the last breakaway riders.
This means that Vingegaard goes into the final stage of the Giro with a lead of 5:22 minutes over Gall. Hindley completes the podium with a gap of 6:25 minutes.
Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) maintained his lead over Davide Piganzoli (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) in the young rider classification and won the white jersey. In the mountain classification, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) emerged as the winner after this stage. Vingegaard, second in the mountains classification, did without mountain counters on the final mountain stage.

The leading group of the day initially consisted of the five riders Jonas Geens (Alpecin - Premier Tech), Axel Huens (Groupama - FDJ United), Jack Haig (Netcompany - Ineos), Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X Mobility) and Guillermo Silva (XDS - Astana). In the chase were Manuele Tarozzi (Bardiani - CSF - 7 Saber) and Larry Warbasse (Tudor), who were only able to catch up with the leaders after a long battle after 70 kilometres.
The peloton allowed the leading group to pull away by more than five minutes. There, the Visma | Lease a Bike team controlled the chase.
Leknessund secured the mountain points on the first climb of the day to Clauzetto (category 3). The following climb to Piancavallo (category 1) was more demanding. From 67 kilometres before the finish, the leading group fell apart: Haig, Leknessund and Warbasse remained from the septet. Haig secured the mountain points at the summit.
In the peloton, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) grabbed a few more mountain points. His attack led to the formation of a chasing group with Igor Arrieta (UAE-Emirates-XRG) and Ludovico Crescioli (Polti-VisitMalta), who first caught up with Axel Huens and later with the leading trio of Haig, Leknessund and Warbasse. The sextet had a lead of 1:40 minutes with 50 kilometres to go. At the foot of the final climb, the gap between the leaders and the peloton was still one minute.
On the final climb to Piancavallo, Crescioli attacked in the breakaway, but the prospect of winning the stage was no longer there at this point. Eleven kilometres before the finish, Vingegaard attacked among the favourites - Gall was able to follow briefly, but then had to let go. Vingegaard rode solo towards his fifth stage win and overall victory in the 2026 Giro d'Italia.
