Jonas Vingegaard was born in 1996 in Hillerslev, Denmark. His professional cycling career began in 2016 with the Danish Continental team ColoQuick-Cult. In 2019, he then joined the Dutch World Tour team Jumbo-Visma, for whom he currently rides.

Career of Jonas Vingegaard

Vingegaard is a mountain specialist and an excellent classics rider. Especially in the Tour de France The Dane has enjoyed great success: in 2021 he finished behind his great rival in the Tour of France. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) came second in the overall standings. In 2022, he defeated the Slovenian and took two stage wins and the overall classification in the world's biggest cycling race. Vingegaard repeated this success in 2023.

2021

It was not until 2021 that Jonas Vingegaard was able to celebrate continuous success: at the beginning of the year, he won the fifth stage of the UAE Tour. This was followed by second place in the overall standings at the Tour of the Basque Country and second place in the Tour de France overall standings. There, after the early withdrawal of Primoz Roglic as team captain and surprised his fans with a podium finish.

2022

In 2022, he took second place overall at the Criterium du Dauphine behind his team-mate Roglic. At the 2022 Tour de France, he was also able to win thanks to a strong performance by his helpers around Wout van Aert and Sepp Kuss beat his rival Pogacar to take two stage wins and the overall classification.

2023

In 2023, Vingegaard won three stages of the O Gran Camino and took the overall victory, shortly afterwards Vingegaard had to settle for third place in Paris-Nice, but in April he secured his first overall victory in the Tour of the Basque Country. This was followed by a break from racing until the Criterium du Dauphine, where the Dane excelled with two stage wins, two second places and overall victory. In July, he celebrated his second overall victory in the Jumbo-Visma jersey at the Tour de France 2023which the Dane took in superior style. Vingegaard was neck-and-neck with Tadej Pogacar for a long time, but in the Individual time trial on the 16th stage he was able to make a preliminary decision before Pogacar suffered a collapse a day later.

In August, Vingegaard competed for the second time since 2020 in the Vuelta a Espana. The man from Hillerslev won two stages, including the mountain finish on the famous Col du Tourmalet and was Second in the overall standings. At the historic triple victory from Jumbo-Visma, he was only beaten by Sepp Kuss.

2024

The Dane celebrated a perfect start to the season with three stage wins and the overall victory at O Gran Camino in Spain. At the beginning of March, he then won Tirreno-Adriatico. On the 5th stage to Valle Castellana, the Dane made a preliminary decision before also winning the mountain finish on Monte Petrano the following day. The next race for Vingegaard was the Basque Country Tour on the programme at the beginning of April. There, the Tour de France winner crashed on the Stage 4 on a descent and was subsequently taken to hospital. On 9 April, his team Visma | Lease a Bike published an update on Vingegaard. The Dane underwent successful surgery on his collarbonebut there is a question mark over his start in the Tour de France. It was initially rumoured that a decision would be made at the beginning of May. At first, however, only Merijn Zeeman, Vingegaard's sporting director, spoke out and gave a further update on his protégé's state of health. An 7 May, Visma | Lease a Bike also published a video showing Vingegaard back on his racing bike for the first time after his crash.

Jonas Vingegaard contract

In December 2023 Vingegaard extended his contract with the team, which will be called Visma | Lease a Bike from 2024, until 2028. This was announced by the Dutch team at the team presentation for the 2024 season.

Jonas Vingegaard Salary

Jonas Vingegaard's salary is said to have been 2.5 million euros gross in 2023. This was reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, TotalVelo and Het Laatste Nieuws. This puts him well behind Tadej Pogacar, who is said to have been the top earner at six million euros. It is not known whether and by how much Vingegaard's earnings have increased as a result of his contract extension at the end of 2023.
