With over 4,000 metres of climbing, the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2026 was supposed to challenge the classification riders. And that's exactly what happened: on the final climb up to Pila - a category 1 climb - the peloton flew apart. Once again, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) was clearly the strongest rider. He won as a soloist 49 seconds ahead of Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM Team). Jai Hindley (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) came third. The three riders also made up places in the overall standings: Vingegaard is now the overall leader in pink, Gall is now third overall and Hindley 5th.

No one can follow Vingegaard's attack

After Davide Pinganzoli (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) kept the pace constantly high on the final climb and several GC riders dropped out of the thinning peloton, Jonas Vingegaard attacked with 4.6 kilometres to go. His increase in pace immediately opened up a gap and the field of GC riders exploded. While the Dane set off alone towards the finish line, only Felix Gall was able to maintain visual contact with the Dane. But over the following kilometres, the Austrian lost more and more of the connection, so that Vingegaard was even able to pick up the pace on the home straight and celebrate his victory.

His outstanding mountain helper Piganzoli also put in a strong performance. Not only did he manage to distance the competition around Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain Victorious) or Derek Gee-West (Lidl - Trek) early on. Even after the Vingegaard attack, he kept up with the best riders in the classification and finished fourth. In the overall classification, Vingegard is first with a lead of 2:26 ahead of Eulálio. Piganzoli is now in a strong 10th place in the classification.

Gall finishes on the podium, Hindley and Pellizzari on the advance

With second place on the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2026, Felix Gall also moves up in the overall classification. Although Gall seemed to be running out of energy, especially in the last two kilometres, he still managed to finish in a largely unchallenged second place. As a result, he overtook Thymen Arensman (Netcompany INEOS) in the overall standings and now finds himself on the podium. The Austrian is now just 24 seconds behind second-placed Afonso Eulálio.

The two Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe riders Jai Hindley and Giuilo Pellizzari crossed the finish line at the same time as Piganzoli, taking third and fifth place respectively. In the end, the trio was separated by just under 10 seconds from the day's runner-up Gall. Although the two riders were unable to follow Gall and Vingegaard's attacks, their tactic of riding at a steady pace worked. They were able to take valuable seconds off their rivals Ben O'Connor (Team Jayco AlUla), Thymen Arensman and Afonso Eulálio. They made up ground in the overall standings with this good result and are now in fifth and sixth place.

Giro d'Italia 2026 - Results of the 14th stage

How the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2026 went

Immediately after the start of the race in Aosta, there was a flurry of attacks from the peloton. Numerous riders were endeavouring to get into the leading group of the day. As a result, a group of around 25 riders formed. Jardi van der Lee (EF Education - EasyPost) and Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates - XRG), who had been riding at the front in the meantime, were joined by numerous other riders. Jan Hirt (NSN Cycling Team), Enric Mas (Movistar Team), Wout Poels (Unibet Rose Rockets), Giulio Ciccone (Lidl - Trek), Einer Rubio (Movistar Team), Jhonatan Narváez (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) and Aleksandr Vlasov (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe), among others, formed a powerful group. They were given a maximum lead of around four minutes. Team Visma | Lease a Bike in particular was responsible for controlling the breakaway throughout the day.

Narváez grabs the green jersey of the Giro d'Italia

While Jardi van der Lee and Giulio Ciccone were particularly active in the mountain classification and collected numerous points, it was Narváez who won the intermediate sprint. The UAE rider has now overtaken the current leader Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) in the points classification.

The breakaway group was already thinning out on the numerous difficult climbs. Going into the final climb, there were only around 15 riders left, who were about 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.

Ciccone's futile battle

In the final climb, Giulio Ciccone repeatedly stepped up the pace in the leading group and tried to pull away with a show of strength. However, his efforts were in vain. The peloton led by Team Visma | Lease a Bike came closer and closer. It was clear to the breakaway riders early on in the climb: there was nothing to be gained for them on the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2026. With 5 kilometres to go, the last remaining breakaway riders were swallowed up by the thinned-out peloton. The last rider to be swallowed up was the active Giulio Ciccone.

First classification riders run into problems

Already 9 kilometres before the finish, the first classification riders had problems keeping up with Visma's high pace. First it was Ben O'Connor who dropped out. A little later, the rose jersey in the person of Afonso Eulálio and Derek Gee-West also had to say goodbye.

When Pellizzari also had to break away around 5 kilometres before the finish, Vingegaard attacked and the field of classification riders finally broke up. The Dane took a commanding victory, while Pellizzari was able to recover and catch up with his team-mate Jai Hindely. The Australian finished third, with Pellizzari coming home shortly afterwards. Second place was secured by Felix Gall, who initially appeared to be able to follow Vingegaard, but later ran into problems. In the end, 10 seconds separated him from the group around Hindley and Pellizzari.
