A curious incident is at the beginning of our picture gallery with the best photos from March. During the women's race of the Strade Bianche in Italy, suddenly a horse on the road. However, the eventual winner Demi Vollering was not deterred by this.
The men's race also provided spectacular snapshots against the backdrop of the Tuscan hills. Once again there was a solo winner: the Briton Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) triumphed at the gravel race in Siena.
This was followed by the two long-distance journeys Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico. While Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) on the roads of France in a duel between the Tour de France winners of the last three years and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Vingegaard's team-mate Primoz Roglic proved his impressive early form at Tirreno-Adriatico.
This was followed by the so-called "journey into spring" at Milan-San Remo. The first of the five cycling monuments featured a thrilling battle between Tadej Pogacar, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck). The latter launched the decisive attack on the Poggio that brought him victory.
Pogacar, van Aert and van der Poel also put their stamp on the classic later in Belgium. E3 Harelbeke made their mark. Van Aert weakened occasionally on the Oude Kwaremont, but fought his way back into the slipstream of his two rivals and ultimately won the sprint.
Just two days after the E3 Prijs, Jumbo-Visma's next prank followed at Gent-Wevelgem. With an impressive performance, the Dutch celebrated a one-two victory in the persistent rain. Van Aert and Christophe Laporte pulled away from the competition on the Kemmelberg around 50 kilometres before the finish and rode towards the finish together. In the end, van Aert conceded victory to his French team-mate. There was a similarly dominant performance in the women's race, albeit by a soloist. The Swiss rider Marlen Reusser secured victory in Wevelgem after 162.5 kilometres.
A foretaste of the upcoming Giro d'Italia in May already delivered the Tour of Catalonia. With Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step) and Primoz Roglic the top favourites for the Tour of Italy battled it out there. Both won two stages each at the Volta a Catalunya, with Roglic finishing as overall winner in Barcelona with a six-second lead over his Belgian rival.
