Stage 1 starts in the Portuguese capital and will finish in Oeiras in the metropolitan area. Lisbon was already the starting point of the Vuelta in 1997. Back then, for the first time in its history, the tour did not start in Spain. A start abroad is still a rarity at the Vuelta, although it has been seen more often recently. With Assen (2009) and Utrecht last year, the Netherlands was the starting point twice, in 2017 it was Nimes (France). In the 89-year history of the race, the second start in Lisbon will therefore only be the fifth start outside of the country.
On the second stage of the 79th Vuelta, the route heads north from the westernmost tip of Portugal in Cascais and a little further inland to Ourem. The third stage begins in nearby Lousa. It takes the riders to Castello Branco near the border with Spain.
The end of the Vuelta remains traditional: as usual, the 2024 stage race will finish in Madrid on 8 September.
The complete route of the Tour of Spain 2024 will be presented on Tuesday, 19 December 2023. TOUR will then analyse the course in detail.
