The Tour de Romandie Feminin was held for the first time in 2022. The overall winner was Ashleigh Moolman ahead of Annemiek van Vleuten. German rider Liane Lippert finished fourth overall. In 2023, the stage race was held for the first time at the beginning of September, just like this year's event. Demi Vollering won the tour ahead of Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Marlen Reusser.
The riders have to cover around 380 kilometres in the Tour de Romandie Feminin 2024. Stages 1 and 3 lead over hilly terrain. There are three 3rd category mountain classifications for the female riders to master here. The queen stage is stage 2, where the finale is a 1st category climb up to Vercorin.
The Tour de Romandie 2024 will open in La Grand Beroche on Lac de Neuchatel at 11:35 on 6 September. From there, the route heads south past Yverdon-les-Bains to Lausanne. The 1st stage of the Tour of Romandie ends here at around 14:58.
The almost 134-kilometre-long stage 1 features three mountain classifications and two intermediate sprints. Although the classification and sprinter teams should be able to control potential breakaways on the stage, the short final climb is likely to be too difficult, at least for the pure sprinters. Classics riders and riders with a strong tempo should have the best chance of winning the stage here.
The 2nd stage of the Tour of Romandie 2024 leads from Chippis to nearby Vercorin. However, the route covers 101.9 kilometres in the form of a circuit. While Chippis lies at 513 metres above sea level, Vecorin is at 1319 metres. The stage starts at 12:16 and the finish is expected at around 15:01.
It is the queen stage of the Tour de Romandie 2024 and although the first 90 kilometres are mostly flat and not very demanding for the riders, the last 9.5 kilometres are all the more challenging. The climb to Vercorin is 8.2 per cent steep on average, with a maximum gradient of 15 per cent. The climbing specialist who is fastest on this climb is likely to win the race.
There is also something for breakaway riders and sprinters on this stage: Two intermediate sprint classifications are up for grabs on Queen's Day.
Stage 3 of the Tour de Romandie 2024 will also be a circular route. It starts and finishes in Morges. The stage not only includes the most kilometres of the tour, but also the most metres in altitude. The start of the final stage is at 11:25, with the finish at around 15:04.
Due to the many hills, the breakaway riders can legitimately hope for a stage win. Normally, however, the sprinters and classification teams should be strong enough to keep the lead group's advantage under control.
The Tour de Romandie Feminin 2024 will not be broadcast live on German TV, but will be streamed live. Discovery Plus offers a paid stream on the three stage days from 6 to 8 September from 2 to 5 pm.
