The second day in Switzerland also ended with a bunch sprint, in which Wiebes was able to extend her own record after 148 kilometres. The 27-year-old now has seven stage wins in the Tour to her name. No other rider has more. Whilst the other sprinters gave her little trouble in securing her next victory, Riejanne Markus (Lidl – Trek) worked hard as part of a breakaway. But she, too, was caught by the peloton just before the home straight.

“It’s special to win in the yellow jersey, but also because my team worked really hard for it,” said Wiebes. “The girls went all out in the final to catch up with Riejanne Markus again. That makes finishing the race all the more satisfying. Riejanne was alone at the front for many, many kilometres. At some point, we had to send Lotte Kopecky in pursuit because we needed everyone to catch her up. So it was up to me to find my own way in the final kilometre and secure the victory.”

Linda Riedmann (Lotto Intermarché Ladies) was the highest-placed German, finishing in tenth place. The general classification contenders all made it to the finish line with the peloton without any problems. Consequently, there have been no changes to the overall standings. Wiebes continues to lead ahead of Kim Le Court (AG Insurance Soudal Team) and Demi Vollering (FDJ United - SUEZ). There were no changes to the jersey standings either. Wiebes retains both the yellow and green jerseys, Océane Mahé (Ma Petite Entreprise) holds onto the mountains jersey and Paula Blasi (UAE Team L’IMAD) retains the white jersey.

Despite the flat start, no breakaway group managed to open up a gap between themselves and the peloton over the first 25 kilometres. The first two mountain classifications were also won from within the peloton, with potential King of the Mountains contenders such as Cédrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly), Marion Bunel (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Maeva Squiban (UAE Team L’IMAD) securing points.

With 95 kilometres still to go, however, a five-rider group formed around the Dutch rider Eline Jansen (VolkerWessels Cycling Team), though they were never allowed to get more than two minutes clear. The group then broke up over the subsequent mountain climbs; 45 kilometres from the finish, a new leading group formed around Célia Gery (FDJ United – SUEZ), Sarah van Dam (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Amanda Spratt (Lidl - Trek), but this new leading group did not last long because it included too many dangerous riders.

Shortly afterwards, Markus gave it a go. She launched her solo breakaway 39 kilometres from the finish. But even her maximum lead was kept small, at around one minute. The Dutch rider defended it, however, right up until the final stretch. It was only when SD Worx mobilised all its available resources and received support from other teams that Markus was caught 600 metres from the finish. Wiebes then launched her sprint and gave the competition no chance.
