The preview with Rolf Aldag of the stages of the 2022 Tour de France
Conclusion of the Danish chapter of this Tour de France - and also the first stage in which the sprinters' teams can be expected to control the race. The classification riders, who were very tense yesterday, will also be hoping for this.
The roads are no longer as narrow as they were the day before and the route is mainly one-way. Nevertheless, it is possible that the chaos of the second stage is still having an effect on many people, which is why things could become more turbulent again at the start of this race day. Nobody wants to be caught up in confusing race situations, and as a result of these thoughts, a new frenzy will arise.
Of course, the weather forecast for this region is also important today, because depending on the wind direction, there is also a risk that the Tour de France peloton will break up again. Today's breakaway group is likely to set off near the world heritage site of Jelling, where important traces of Viking culture can be found.
However, this will come as no surprise to the teams of Caleb Ewan, Fabio Jakobsen, Dylan Groenewegen, Sam Bennett and the other sprint stars. With a view of the Flensburg Fjord, they will bring their sprinters' trains into position on the approach to the small town of Sonderborg, where they will take a left turn onto the wide country road to the finish line.
As a professional cyclist, our expert Rolf Aldag rode the Tour de France ten times up to 2004; as a manager and sports director, he has led various top teams through France and this year, for the first time, he will represent the German team Bora-Hansgrohe as head of sport at the Tour de France. There are few people who can tell you so vividly what can happen on the stages of a grand tour and within the peloton.
For TOUR the 53-year-old sports manager has once again carefully studied the elevation profiles and route tables for this year's Tour de France. In his predictions, he names the teams and riders he sees at the front on each day, assesses the difficulty of the routes and says where he expects attacks and from whom. Will there be a bunch sprint? Will a breakaway group make it to the finish?
Aldag also assesses for TOUR what role each stage plays for the classification jerseys (see above): The more coloured jerseys our expert assigns to a stage, the greater its significance for the respective classification. The yellow jersey symbolises the weight of the respective stage in the overall classification, the green jersey stands for the importance of the best sprinter in the points classification and the red dotted jersey for the mountain classification, i.e. for the best climber.
