After a stage win at the Tour de France Femmes 2023, Yara Kastelijn also wins a stage race for the first time. The 28-year-old wins a World Tour for the first time. The overall victory did not come out of nowhere: last year she finished third overall in the Tour of Burgos, and in the Tour of the Basque Country she was only beaten in the GC by Mischa Bredewold (Team SD Worx - Protime). Kastelijn is now celebrating one of the greatest successes of her career.
When the last breakaway rider, Sara Martín (Movistar Team), was caught with 7 kilometres to go, the peloton and the favourites for the classification entered the final climb. The Lagunas de Neila awaited them - a 6-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 10 per cent.
Due to the high pace, numerous riders dropped out of the decision early on. Unsurprisingly, this included the previous overall leader Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx - Protime). The Fenix-Premier Tech and FDJ United - SUEZ teams in particular kept the pace high on the final climb.
When only the classification riders were left with around 3.5 kilometres to go, Évita Muzic put the pedal to the metal. While only Kastelijn was able to follow, other riders such as Mischa Bredewold or Amanda Spratt (Lidl - Trek) lost the connection.
As a result, Kastelijn stayed behind the strong Muzic and was then able to attack 1.3 kilometres before the finish. She got out of the saddle and literally left the Frenchwoman standing. Muzic was then no longer able to respond. Thanks to the attack, Kastelijn not only took the stage win, but also the overall victory ahead of Muzic. Third at the finish was the Spaniard Usoa Ostolaza (Laboral Kutxa - Fundación Euskadi).
