Cartoonist Günter "peng" Mayer, together with photographer Hermann Seidl and Tour Director Thomas Pupp, developed four artworks on the history of the Austrian tour. The works are published in a limited edition of 75 pieces and are signed by hand. Each artwork costs 75 euros plus 10 euros shipping and is now available in the Tour of Austria online shop.
The cartoons deal with four defining scenes: "It takes good legs to win the Tour of Austria", "The dream of the Glocknerkönig", "The desperate Rudi Mitteregger with his legendary scene - Wo sann denn de Affen, heast" and "Peter Luttenberger wins in the sprint, but our ORF is also very close". Mayer and Seidl worked for months on the motifs to capture typical moments of the tour.
The presentation at Fotohof Salzburg was attended by Salzburg's mayor Bernhard Auinger, two-time Tour winner Gerrit Glomser, Hrinkow Advarics pro Dominik Hödlmoser and Harald Mayer, President of Cycling Austria. Dr Richard Menapace, son of the first Tour winner, also attended the event. Glomser reminisced about his career: "From my fall into the wire mesh after the stage win on the Kitzbüheler Horn to the food poisoning on the Graz stage, the experiences away from success are many and varied."
The Tour of Austria 2026 will take place from 7 to 12 July. The route of the tour has not yet been announced. The Tour of Austria is celebrating its 75th birthday this year, marking the beginning of the Tour of Austria's history. In 1949, the first winner of the Tour of Austria was Richard Menapace. He won by a margin of 38:46 minutes. The record winners of the Tour include Wolfgang Steinmayr with four victories (1972, 1973, 1975, 1976) and Rudolf Mitteregger with three victories (1970, 1974, 1977).
