Tadej Pogačar is probably the best cyclist of this generation at the start of the small tour in Switzerland. After an impressive spring with four out of five possible victories in one-day races, there is little doubt about the Slovenian's form. But the big thing is: Tours are always something different, here the riders have to perform every day. All the other favourites have already contested at least two tours this season, many even three. This is definitely a small advantage, as the body is already used to the multi-day effort. The superiority of previous years is in contrast to this, there are no doubts that the cycling star will be at the front. Who has the best cards in the end and for whom could the podium come as a surprise?
All eyes are on Tadej Pogačar. The Slovenian is in impressive form at the start and combines the qualities required for a tour of this calibre like no other rider. Whether in the high mountains, on undulating terrain or in the time trial - Pogačar is competitive in every discipline and also seems almost unassailable tactically. Under normal racing conditions, there is therefore hardly any way around him, even though he has not yet competed in a tour this season. There are many indications that he will control the race and ultimately win it with confidence.
The battle for the remaining podium places will be particularly exciting. At the centre of this is a three-way battle between Florian Lipowitz, Oscar Onley and Lenny Martinez. Lipowitz seems to have the best cards in this duel: The German has made a remarkable development in a short space of time and impresses with his consistency and balanced performance profile. This versatility could help him decisively, especially in a tour like the Tour de Romandie, which presents very different challenges. However, he is unlikely to come close to Tadej Pogačar - the Slovenian is simply too strong for that at the moment.
Onley and Martinez also have plenty of potential and can play to their strengths on the long climbs in particular. Over several days of racing, however, they seem a little more vulnerable, which is why they are unlikely to make it to the top of the overall standings. A third place nevertheless seems realistic for both of them. Should Lipowitz show weaknesses, even more is possible - but Tadej Pogačar remains out of reach for them too. Directly behind him, Primož Roglič is the next candidate for the podium. Although the experienced tour specialist has the necessary class, he does not currently give the impression of being at the level to seriously compete for victory. A podium finish is still possible, but it will be very difficult for him against the new generation.
With Antonio Tiberi and Mauro Schmid, there are also two riders in the starting blocks who are more likely to be categorised as outsiders. Tiberi is likely to be an important helper for Lenny Martinez. Mauro Schmid, on the other hand, is travelling to his home race in strong form, but the long climbs could ultimately be a little too demanding for the Swiss rider.
