The 4th stage of Paris-Nice offered classic terrain with a total of seven mountain classifications, all of which were short, steep and short. And once again, there was no sign of the long-distance race's nickname "Ride to the Sun": As on the previous day, the riders had to contend with a lot of rain and low temperatures. After a long day of 203 kilometres, Lenny Martinez (Bahrain - Victorious) the stage on the final climb.
At the end of the stage, the Côte-de-Notre-Dame-de-Sciez (2nd category) awaited, a ramp only 1.7 kilometres long but with an average gradient of 10.8 per cent. Too difficult for the man in the yellow jersey, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike)who lost touch with a heavy kick in the final kilometres. At least team-mate Matteo Jorgenson took the yellow jersey.
Jorgenson led the group of favourites for a long time on the final climb and finally finished behind Clement Champoussin (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) came third on the day, three seconds behind. Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) finished six seconds behind in fifth place and took the lead in the junior classification. In the overall standings, Lipowitz moved up to third place, 36 seconds behind Jorgenson.
Vingegaard, who crashed on the road, is now 22 seconds behind his team-mate Jorgenson. He finished the stage 26 seconds behind the day's winner. Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl - Trek) lost contact with the best riders early on and lost 28 seconds.

Despite the adverse conditions and temperatures of around three degrees at the start of the stage, the field of riders covered the first two hours of the race at a remarkable pace of 48 kilometres per hour. This was mainly due to numerous attempts to form the breakaway group of the day. Among others, EF Education - EsayPost with Georg Steinhauser and Neilson Powless tried it, other escape attempts were made by Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Guillaume Martin (Groupama - FDJ) as well as Michael Matthews (Jayco - AlUla) or Joshua Tarling (Inoes Grenadiers) - but all unsuccessful.
It was only after around 75 kilometres that the duo Ben Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) and Thibaud Gruel (Groupama - FDJ) managed to break away from the field. Their lead was a maximum of three minutes. Vingegaard was then involved in a crash 84 kilometres from the finish, but was able to continue the race quickly.
After the fourth of the day's seven mountain classifications, Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers) attacked 43 kilometres from the finish and quickly caught up with the two breakaway riders around his team-mate Swift. At this point, the trio's lead was only around one minute. On the subsequent climb to the Côte de Chavagneux, Foss broke away from his two companions, who were caught up shortly afterwards. 30 kilometres remained from there to the finish.
Foss also won the intermediate sprint in Porte-des-Bonnevaux and secured a six-second time bonus - Lipowitz took two seconds from the chasing pack. In the undulating finale, the group was reduced to around 40 riders, who caught up with Foss again five kilometres before the finish. On the final climb, UAE Team Emirates - XRG in particular dictated the pace, which caused difficulties for many riders. Surprisingly early on, Vingegaard's yellow jersey also found itself at the back of a group of around 20 riders - and finally had to let go with 700 metres to go.
Meanwhile, his team-mate Jorgenson pushed the pace at the front. However, the stage win went to Martinez on the steep final ramp with a late acceleration just a few metres before the finish.
