Marianne Vos (Visma | Lease a Bike) sprinted to her second stage win at the Vuelta Femenina. On stage 6, however, a photo finish had to decide whether the victory went to her or Mischa Bredewold (Team SD Worx - Protime).

First Vos cheered, then things quietened down again for a few minutes. And then she was able to celebrate her 257th career victory, which also secured her the green jersey ahead of time if she finishes the 7th and final stage.

Similar to the second stage, the sixth also ended after 126 kilometres in Baltanas on a slightly uphill finishing straight. Vos' first success against Letizia Paternoster (Liv AlUla Jayco) was as clear and clear-cut as it was close against Bredewold. Vos' tiger jump was not optimally timed, so that she looked like a relatively clear winner just a few moments before the line, but Bredewold, who had simply pulled through, came back to within a margin. Ally Wollaston (FDJ - Suez) finished third, several metres behind.

Lippert seeks preliminary decision

"I'm happy, but also very exhausted," said the 37-year-old winner at the finish. "We knew that we would get our chance today and that's why we went all-in again. It was pretty close in the end. But we're still going to celebrate a little bit and then finish the tour well tomorrow."

Even though only a group of around 50 riders reached the finish together, nothing changed at the top of the overall standings. Demi Vollering (FDJ - Suez) defended the red jersey with a 45-second lead over Anna van der Breggen (Team SD Worx - Protime) and one more over Marlen Reusser (Movistar Team). Vollering also retains the mountain trio.

The first 100 kilometres had been flat. Only in the last part of the race were several waves part of the course. Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) tried to break away on one of them. Vollering. Vos and Bredewold went with her, but had little interest in bringing the group to the finish. The thinned out peloton came back and the bunch sprint had to decide.

On the initially flat first few kilometres, which were again accompanied by the odd rain shower, there was no breakaway group with any real ambition to get away from the field. Several half-motivated attempts failed.

But then, after 40 kilometres, almost 20 riders had suddenly pulled out a lead. The strong group around Vittoria Guazzini (FDJ - Suez), Elena Cecchini and Femke Markus (Team SD Worx - Protime), Ellen van Dijk (Lidl - Trek), Kristin Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly), Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance - Soudal) and Pfeiffer Georgi (Team Picnic - PostNL) also included her team-mate Franziska Koch and Romy Kasper (Human Powered Health). Although all the big teams were represented twice in some cases, the teamwork did not work optimally and a good 35 kilometres later the peloton had caught up again.

Teutenberg among the runaways again

Immediately, counter attacks started, in which Lea Lin Teutenberg (Lotto Ladies) once again took part. The lead of her three-man group with Sarah Roy (EF Education-Oatly) and Nicole Steigenga (AG Insurance - Soudal) grew to just over a minute, a group of followers that had also formed never made it to the front. The trio made it to the intermediate sprint and also into the harder, undulating section.

When Lippert attacked from the peloton in the second wave 14 kilometres before the finish, the end of the breakaway was sealed. Vollering, Bredewold and Vos went with them. Shortly after the 10-kilometre mark, the peloton, which had shrunk to barely more than 50 riders, had closed the gap again.

Too cautious in the bend: Only Vos and Bredewold fight for victory

In the ups and downs of the final kilometres, nobody was able to break away from the peloton, even if Cédrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly) tried once again on a descent. In the end, however, the riders rode together for the final kilometre. The preliminary decision was made in the last bend 200 metres before the finish. Apart from Bredewold, who opened up a long sprint shortly behind, and Vos, all the other women had already lost their chance of victory there because they rode too cautiously around the corner. Vos, however, had Bredewold's rear wheel and was then able to move ahead of her compatriot by a wafer-thin margin at the finish line.
