Marianne Vos won the 2nd stage of the Vuelta Femenina 2025 in a sprint. It was only her first win of the season, but already the 256th of her career.

After the 37-year-old was unable to celebrate in the classics as usual in the spring, the Visma | Lease a Bike rider was very relieved. "It's a good feeling to have finished now because the team has worked so hard. Not just today, but the whole season," said the Dutchwoman. "Especially in view of what happened yesterday," she alluded to the botched start in the team time trial through no fault of her own.

In the slightly uphill final, Vos was the first to turn into the last bend 150 metres before the finish. It was the decisive scene for the day's victory. Because the lead she took with her and her irresistible attack didn't give the competition the slightest chance. Letizia Paternoster (Liv AlUla Jayco) sprinted into second place at a considerable distance. She caught Letizia Borghesi (EF Education-Oatly). The best German was Franziska Koch (Team Picnic PostNL) in seventh place.

Paternoster also jumped to the top of the overall standings thanks to the bonus seconds in the finale. Ellen Van Dijk (Lidl-Trek), who had led the classification, did not make it into the peloton with the leading group. Just like GC contender Pauliena Rooijakkers (Fenix-Deceuninck), she lost almost a minute after losing contact with a large group on the long, wet descent up to nine kilometres before the finish.

How the 2nd stage of the Vuelta Femenina 2025 went

After the short team time trial at the start, the race continued briefly. The second stage of the women's Vuelta also remained just under the 100-kilometre mark. The pace in the peloton was correspondingly sporty, although the day was relatively hilly. However, the biggest challenge awaited right after the start in Molins de Rei.

Immediately after the sharp start, the road climbed up towards Alt de La Creu de l'Aragall (2nd category). Several women tried to break away, but in the end no one got away. Ane Santesteban (Laboral Kutxa - Fundación Euskadi) then secured the mountain points, taking over the mountain jersey, as these were the only points awarded on the road.

Elena Cecchini (Team SD Worx - Protime) then tried to attack on the descent, but she didn't get too far either and was caught again 64 kilometres before the finish. Shortly afterwards it started to rain, which provoked the odd crash on the now slippery roads. This also caused the pace to drop again.

Van der Breggen crashes, but doesn't lose any time

41 kilometres before the finish, the intermediate sprint was taken, which Vos won with aplomb. Shortly afterwards, Lea Lin Teutenberg (Lotto Ladies) attacked, but she also barely made it six kilometres ahead of the peloton. Things remained quiet for a long time after that, until there were several more crashes in the final 15 kilometres. Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx - Protime) did not escape unscathed either.

The peloton was stretched out on the long descent before the finish, and on the final, flat eight kilometres some of the riders rolled back together, but none of them came back. Although van der Breggen managed to get back into the large leading group after her crash, van Dijk and Rooijakkers in particular had to accept significant gaps.

The final might have turned out a little differently if Cat Ferguson (Movistar Team), who entered the final corner in fourth place, hadn't slipped her front wheel on a road marking and held up part of the field. This would have made little difference to Vos' victory, but the positions behind her would have been reshuffled.
