The organisers of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles have announced Venice Beach as the starting location for the road cycling races. However, the field of participants remains very small.

The cycling competitions of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles will begin at a spectacular location. As the organisers have now announced, the legendary Venice Beach will serve as the starting point for the Olympic road races. "From the beach to the boardwalk, Venice is an iconic part of the LA experience. And now it will be an iconic part of the 2028 Olympic experience," the LA28 organising committee announced on social media. The road race will have a "picturesque start on Venice Beach", it added. The exact route and finish location will be announced at a later date.

2028 Olympics: Limit of 90 riders in road cycling

Meanwhile, the discussion about the number of participants in the Olympic road races is entering the next round. As the organisers of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles have now confirmed, the starting field will remain limited to 90 riders at the upcoming event. This was already the case at the Games in Paris 2024 and caused considerable controversy in the cycling world. The traditionally strong cycling nations in particular, such as the Netherlands and Belgium, feel disadvantaged by this regulation as they are unable to realise their full potential.

While this may be understandable from an organisational point of view, it is met with incomprehension by many cycling experts and athletes.

The combination of the iconic backdrop of Venice Beach and the challenging route, which is yet to be announced, should make for spectacular images and exciting racing.

The exact dates for the road races have not yet been finalised, but will be announced within the Olympic time window of 14 to 30 July 2028 lie.
