He's done it again! Jonathan Milan wins his third stage at the Giro d'Italia 2024. After his successes on stage 4 and 11, the Italian from Team Lidl-Trek also bagged stage 13 in Cento, relegating Stanislaw Aniolkowski (Cofidis) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious) to second and third place. Perhaps the German could have done even better.
"I got into a good position and was on Johnny's (Jonathan Milan) rear wheel. But then I had to brake because (Rui) Oliveira spun out on the right side after his lead-out. Then it's difficult to pick up the pace again. I'm happy to have finished third because I didn't have the legs," said Bauhaus at Eurosport.
In the overall standings, despite intermediate wind edges Tadej Pogacar had no trouble defending the pink jersey ahead of the individual time trial on Saturday and the queen stage on Sunday.
Little chance of success and a lot of wind: the breakaway riders had a particularly tough job on the flat 179 kilometres between Riccione and Cento. Nevertheless, there were three riders eager to attack: Andrea Pietrobon (Polti-Kometa), Alessandro Tonelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF - Faizane) and Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF - Faizane). The trio pulled out a maximum lead of three minutes on the peloton. The sprinter teams Lidl-Trek for Jonathan Milan and Alpecin-Deceuninck for Kaden Groves controlled the peloton.
The classification riders initially enjoyed a relaxed day on the back wheels of their team-mates. From around 90 kilometres before the finish, however, things got hectic as the teams pushed to the front in anticipation of possible windy echelons. 30 kilometres later, Ineos Grenadiers seized the moment and split the peloton into three on the windward edge.
However, the Brits were unable to put Geraint Thomas in trouble in the fight for the podium. With Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek), only the top favourite for the stage win had missed the post breakaway, which is why Alpecin-Deceuninck also set the pace for its sprinter Kaden Groves in the first peloton. The three breakaway riders who were caught 52 kilometres from the finish were the victims of the windy conditions. The chase race went on for another 15 kilometres before everything came together again.
After that, the peloton calmed down. Martin Marcellusi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF - Faizane) and Dries De Pooter (Intermarche-Wanty) took advantage of this to form a new breakaway duo. The two of them gained half a minute, while Simon Geschke (Cofidis) had to survive a scary moment when he was involved in a crash around 20 kilometres before the finish.
De Pooter continued alone at the front, Marcellusi ran out of steam. But even De Pooter had no chance against the peloton. The Belgian stayed in front until nine kilometres before the finish, before being caught by the sprinters who were preparing for the bunch sprint in Cento. This initially went almost perfectly for Lidl-Trek. Simone Consonni launched the sprint for Jonathan Milan, but the endeavour of the two Italians was disrupted by a Colombian: Fernando Gaviria. The Movistar sprinter passed him and opened the sprint extremely early.
Milan had to rally briefly, then passed him and took his third stage win of the Giro d'Italia 2024. Stanislaw Aniolkowski (Cofidis) finished second, ahead of Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious), who had already finished third on stage 4.
There were no shifts among the top 10 in the overall standings. However, this is to be expected on Saturday, because the second individual time trial of the Tour of Italy.
