The Giro has now returned to the north. The second time trial of the tour ends on the southern shore of Lake Garda in Desenzano del Garda. The Giro time trial started here in 1971, but otherwise the small town is just as unknown in the history of the Tour of Italy as Castiglione delle Stiviere, where the battle against the clock begins.
Compared to the first time trial, which ended with a veritable mountain finish, this time there are only 150 metres of altitude to conquer. And these are spread relatively evenly over the course in several shallow waves. However, the course is quite twisty.
Initially, the course moves in a south-easterly direction, then heads relatively straight north and then west again, so that more or less a semi-circle is described. In this respect, the wind will also play its part.
After the first time trial went to Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) is now likely to take his seventh stage win at the Giro. On the flat, the Italian should still have an advantage over the man in pink.
In general, the gaps - especially between the contenders for the overall classification - should not be as large as in the first time trial. The lack of a mountain and almost ten kilometres less distance will ensure this. It could only be difficult for the pure mountain fleas, who have no chance of making up any time here.
