"It's the biggest sporting event in 50 years here in Munich, since the 1972 Olympic Games," said Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter 100 days before the start of the European Championships, heralding the final phase of preparations for the major sporting event.
The cyclists are travelling to the Bavarian capital with great expectations, as there are numerous medals to be won. Here is an overview of the competitions with elevation profiles and timetables. The best spots along the route and further details about the races can be found here.
The women start their almost 130-kilometre route in Landsberg am Lech, around 60 kilometres west of Munich. From there, the riders pass Lake Ammersee and Lake Starnberg via Wolfratshausen to Munich. In the Bavarian capital, the decision is made on a 13-kilometre circuit in the city centre, which has to be completed twice before the finish line at Odeonsplatz is reached.
The topography of the race is slightly undulating, but there are no more major obstacles on the programme in the final in Munich, which makes a sprinter very likely as the winner.
The men's and women's time trial competitions at the European Championships will be held in Fürstenfeldbruck, west of Munich, on a circuit. The course is 24 kilometres long, with 180 metres of elevation gain to overcome.
The start and finish are located at the former Cistercian monastery in Fürstenfeld. The course is not too winding, so that the strong rouleurs should be able to decide victory amongst themselves.
The starting signal for the 209.4-kilometre men's road race is given in Murnau am Staffelsee, around 80 kilometres south of Munich. The first 130 kilometres or so are undulating. Via Kochel am See, the riders first climb the Kesselberg.
After reaching Walchensee, the route continues via Bad Tölz towards Lake Starnberg. In Eurasburg, another short stint with a maximum gradient of 18 per cent awaits. The peloton reaches Munich via Starnberg and the Olympiastrasse, where the men will also complete a circuit in the city centre - five times in total. Here too, a bunch sprint is probably the most realistic scenario.
The track competitions will be held in the east of the Bavarian capital at the trade fair centre. A temporary cycling track will be set up in one of the exhibition halls especially for this purpose.
