With a total of seven world championship titles and the gold medal in the track four, the 34-year-old is one of the most successful female athletes in German cycling.
"It's the right time," Brennauer told the German Press Agency. "I think it's great that I can leave sport with this positive energy and that I was able to choose the time myself and wasn't forced to do so."
Brennauer retires at the peak of her career. In addition to Olympic gold, the Allgäu native also won European and World Championship gold in the single and team pursuit as well as the World Championship title in the mixed road race in 2021. The German women's four with Brennauer, Lisa Klein, Franziska Brauße and Mieke Kröger was also named team of the year in Baden-Baden.
In Munich, Germany's cyclist of the year will be competing on both the road and the track. "I'll be taking it all in again there," she said.
After her career, Brennauer is still employed as a professional soldier in the German Armed Forces and wants to stay close to the sport.
"I hope that I get the opportunity to pass on a lot of my knowledge and experience," she said. A role as a trainer is also conceivable.
