Lorena Wiebes was unstoppable in China too.
Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx – Protime) has once again demonstrated her truly exceptional status as cycling’s finest sprinter, winning every race there was to win at the three-day Tour of Chongming Island.

Thanks to her three stage wins, the Dutch rider also claimed the overall classification on the completely flat island off the coast of Shanghai. She thus ends the 2026 road season with 24 victories – one fewer than last year, which therefore remains her personal best.

On Chongming, Lara Gillespie (UAE Team L’IMAD) was Wiebes’s main rival. At the start, the Irishwoman was still third behind Clara Copponi (Lidl - Trek), but on the second day she put up a fight against Wiebes right up to the finish line – though this was also down to the fact that the ‘sprint queen’ had been tucked in for a long time and was only able to apply her full power to the pedals late on. On the third stage, Wiebes once again had a safety margin of a few metres over the chasing pack led by Gillespie.

Wiebes has already managed to claim all the stage wins and the overall classification in a stage race this year. That was at the end of July at the Tour de Pologne, which also consisted of three stages. But she has also achieved the hat-trick on Chongming. That was during her first appearance in 2019, when the now 27-year-old was still at the start of her career and riding for Team Parkhotel Valkenburg. At the time, those were her first victories at WorldTour level. She had never returned to this race until now.

The second event in China, which in recent years has marked the end of the WorldTour season, has been cancelled. She has not entered the Eneco Tour through her native Netherlands either. And with good reason. Wiebes will be competing next week at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, which are being held at the same time – a fact that ultimately explains her decision not to take part in Chongming. As the defending champion in the scratch race and the omnium, she is once again among the favourites there.
