The German team Bora-Hansgrohe announced that Giovanni Aleotti did not start the seventh stage due to a positive corona test. The 23-year-old Italian had previously shown symptoms and was immediately isolated.
Fellow countryman Nicola Conci from Team Alpecin-Deceuninck Aleotti and Conci are two of numerous professionals who have been thwarted by the virus.
The Jumbo-Visma-Team of Slovenian favourite Primoz Roglic complained of several withdrawals before the start of the Giro. The Italian Giulio Ciccone from the Trek team had to withdraw after a positive test, as did the Swiss Gino Mäder from Bahrain-Victorious. In the Bora team, Emanuel Buchmann was most recently affected by coronavirus in April and had to withdraw from the Tour de Romandie. Kämna and world champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step) had declared that they would continue to wear masks in some situations.
Today the pros started on the seventh stage and, at 218 kilometres, the longest and most demanding stage of the Tour of Italy to date between Capua and the Campo Imperatore plateau on the Gran Sasso in Abruzzo.
