Alongside the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana, the Giro d'Italia is one of the three major national tours in professional cycling that last three weeks. The Tour of Italy traditionally takes place in May. After the classics in spring, it is therefore the first major highlight among the tours. The Giro is known for its varied route.
In 2023, 21 stages are once again on the programme. The riders will cover around 3500 kilometres from the start on the Costa dei Trabocchi to the finish in Rome. There are three time trials, stages for sprinters, for breakaways, but also some very difficult sections in the high mountains. A total of 22 teams are taking part. Each team will have eight riders at the start. That makes a total of 176 professional cyclists who will make up the peloton of the Giro d'Italia 2023.
