The men's race over 259.2 kilometres from Compiègne to Roubaix developed into a thrilling duel between Mathieu van der Poel and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates - XRG). For a long time, the two top favourites rode side by side at the front of the race. The preliminary decision was made 38 kilometres before the finish when Pogačar crashed in a right-hand bend. Van der Poel used this moment to break away and then rode to an unchallenged solo victory.

The Dutchman made history with his third consecutive triumph. He is the first driver since Francesco Moser in 1978-1980 to achieve this feat. "The hat-trick means a lot to me. The race was really tough. When Tadej Pogačar made the mistake on the bend, I just had to keep going, even though it was still a long way to go. I'm happy to have made it to the finish," explained van der Poel in the winner's interview.

Dramatic scenes on the cobblestones

The pictures of the race impressively show the toughness of the classic. There were repeated crashes and technical faults on the bumpy pavé sectors. The shots of the Arenberg forest were particularly spectacular.

The moment when Pogačar crashed in a bend 38 kilometres before the finish was also dramatic. The footage shows how the Slovenian got stuck on a barrier and went down. Although he was able to continue the race, he lost touch with van der Poel. In the end, Pogačar finished in second place, 1:18 minutes behind. Mads Pedersen completed the podium in third place.

The women's race on Saturday was no less spectacular. Pauline Ferrand-Prévot came out on top after an impressive solo ride over the final 20 kilometres. The Frenchwoman took advantage of an attack by Denmark's Emma Norsgaard Bjerg (Lidl - Trek) to break away. She then rode away from the rest of the field like a time trial and reached the finish in the Roubaix velodrome with a comfortable lead.

It was a special triumph for Ferrand-Prévot, as her boyfriend Dylan van Baarle (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) also won the classic three years ago. "In the last two days I really wasn't sure if I could start, but then I just started to give my best for Marianne Vos," explained the winner overjoyed at the finish. Letizia Borghesi (EF Education-Oatly) and Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx - Protime) followed in second and third place.
