Tiesj Benoot has won Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. The Belgian came out on top with an attack in the final kilometre.

After the triumph by Dylan van Baarle at Omloop Het Niewusblad on Saturday has Jumbo-Visma even celebrated a double victory on Sunday. Belgian rider Tiesj Benoot won Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, with second place going to his team-mate Nathan van Hooydonck.

Five-man lead group at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne

Benoot was part of a five-man lead group that was initiated by Jumbo-Visma around 80 kilometres before the finish. This group included van Hooydonck, another rider from the Dutch team. In addition, Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) and Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty) with us.

In the final, Jumbo-Visma made clever use of its tactical superiority with two riders in the group. Van Hooydonck and Benoot took it in turns to attack. Benoot finally made the winning move, attacking around 700 metres before the finish and leaving his rivals behind.

Emotional victory for Benoot

It was Benoot's first victory since March 2020, when he won a stage and the points classification at Paris-Nice. He also has a long period of suffering behind him. The 28-year-old broke a vertebra in his neck in a training crash in the Italian Alps in August 2022 and did not compete in any more races until the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday. The triumph at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne was correspondingly emotional for him.

"A difficult phase is behind me. I would like to dedicate the victory to my friends and my parents. Cyclists who are injured are not the most pleasant people," said Benoot.
