Six recipes for road cyclists that show how easy it is for any athlete to prepare their own food. A must for every long cycle tour!

Do-it-yourself is the trend. Endurance athletes can also make their own food for tours with little effort - and are usually much more environmentally friendly when travelling than with industrially produced food supplements packaged in small quantities.

In this series of articles you will find a total of six recipes for gels, bars and the like, which are ideal for longer road bike tours and can be carried perfectly in your jersey pocket.

Beetroot waffles: the ingredients

For 8 waffles you need

  • 150 g wholemeal spelt flour
  • 100 g spelt flour (type 630)
  • 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar baking powder
  • 4 tablespoons (40 g) agave syrup (or honey)
  • 4 tablespoons (40 grams) of hemp protein powder
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon (10 grams) of ground linseed
  • 250 ml beetroot juice
  • 50 ml sparkling mineral water
  • some rapeseed oil for baking

This is how it works: The preparation

Preparation time 45 minutes

Mix the wholemeal spelt flour, spelt flour and baking powder in a mixing bowl. Then mix the agave syrup with the hemp protein powder, salt and crushed linseed using a food processor or hand mixer. Gradually add the beetroot juice and mineral water and mix everything into a smooth batter. Brush the baking surface of the preheated waffle iron with a little oil and bake the batter in batches to form waffles. Important: Brush the waffle iron with a little oil after each baking process to prevent the batter from sticking!

Beetroot waffles: the nutritional values

One 80 gram wafer contains 160 kilocalories.

Of which attributable to:

  • Carbohydrates 25 g (65 % of the calorie content)
  • Fat 2 g (12 % of the calorie content)
  • Protein 9 g (23 % of the calorie content)
