The TOUR Transalp, Europe's largest stage race for racing cyclists, will start its 19th edition in 2023. From 18 to 24 June, well-known passes such as the Passo Giau or the Mendel Pass will beckon.

Those who take part in the TOUR Transalp experience a turbulent week full of excitement and emotion. However, the mountain roads and Alpine passes lose none of their fascination when you ride them alone. Everyone can experience the route and their adventure individually. In this series, we take a relaxed look at the seven stages without any time pressure.

TOUR Transalp: Lots to see along the route

When the clock is ticking, ambition takes hold. During the race week from 18 to 25 June 2023, the group dynamics will keep the TOUR Transalp participants on their toes. There are refreshment points along the route and at the finish, and you will find a group that motivates and pushes you. This keeps the athletes focussed on the road and the finish line permanently in their sights. But there is a lot to see along the route: from East Tyrol, South Tyrol, Veneto and Trentino.

For this series, we switch off the stopwatch and take the time to look left and right to see what there is to see and experience along the road and in the towns. Where can you stop for a bite to eat? Where is it worth taking a short detour from the original route? Where can you shorten the route without reducing the experience factor? Is it worth travelling only individual stages - with return transport, or as part of a circular tour?

Transalp participants must complete the entire route in one week. Tourists can also collect the experiences as they wish. In this series, race director Marc Schneider summarises these opportunities to make more out of it than just a race route.

In 2023, seven stages will take you from Lienz in Austria to Arco in Italy. A total of 826 kilometres and 18596 metres in altitude have to be conquered - a challenge for the legs and an absolute treat for the eyes, as there is no shortage of panoramas and prominent peaks at the 19th edition.

Varied road bike route across the Alps

Schneider has put together a route for the stage race for everyone that is full of surprises and differences. The TOUR Transalp leads past the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern and penetrates deep into the heart of the Dolomites. But it also takes you to the Prosecco vineyards in Veneto, to the vineyards on Lake Kaltern, through the apple orchards in Val di Non and across the alpine pastures on the Asiago and Lavarone plateau. "On the same day, first the cool mountain air and then the warm south wind blow around your ears. And the next day the other way round," describes Marc Schneider. "You have to be prepared for things to turn out differently at the end of the day than you imagined at the beginning" - the 2023 route reflects the spirit of discovery that has always characterised the Transalp adventure.

In addition to familiar places and passes, there are once again some new features. From Lienz - part of the TOUR Transalp for the first time - the stage race for everyone goes to Sillian in East Tyrol and from there on to Primiero / San Martino di Castrozza in Italy - the Passo Giau determines this stage in sporting terms. The next stage finish in Pederobba is another first on the programme. It is the royal stage and so varied that you could call it a small Transalp in itself.

Finish of the TOUR Transalp 2023 in Arco

The next section to Folgaria does not fit the standard Transalp cliché - unexpected changes of scenery and ups and downs characterise this fourth stage. The fifth day takes you to the Kaltern wine region, where the Manghen Pass is the longest and most challenging climb of the 19th edition. The sixth stage starts with a climb up Kaltern's "local mountain", the Mendel Pass, and scores with a high panoramic factor. The destination Valle dei Laghi is also new on the TOUR Transalp list. From there, it is only a stone's throw to the finish in Arco on the last day, where the finishers of the stage race for everyone can celebrate after an exhausting seven days.
