The figures show a clear trend in cycling. In 2016, 44 women started out of a total of 345 participants, which corresponded to a share of 12.8 per cent. Nine years later, 306 women took part out of 1,579 starters. The proportion of women thus rose to 19.4 per cent. In May 2026, 172 women had already registered out of a total of 854 participants, which corresponds to 20.1 per cent.
Lina Schneeweiß from the Kufsteinerland tourism association sees this as a change in the sport. "We see that cycling is becoming increasingly popular. It's not just about performance, but also about community, experiencing nature and the joy of being out and about together," explains the project manager.
The Munich-based female cycling force community is working with the Kufsteinerland Cycling Marathon to attract more women to road cycling. The platform organises community rides, workshops and joint events. "Many women start out with a stronger focus on community and less pressure to perform," says Leonie Schulte from female cycling force in a press release from the organiser. "This is exactly why we want to create spaces where you feel comfortable and can start without pressure."
The cooperation began in 2025 and will be expanded for the anniversary. The supporting programme includes a Welcome Ride for women in Kufstein. A workshop for mechanics provides practical tips on all aspects of racing bikes and offers space for dialogue in a relaxed atmosphere.
Anna Kristler, chairwoman of the URC Ebbs, is also observing the trend. "Cycling has long been a male-dominated sport. But a change is taking place right now," says Kristler. The club offers its own women's rides where beginners can gain their first experience.
Kristler himself regularly takes part in the Kufsteinerland Cycle Marathon. "The atmosphere is simply special. You look out for each other and get to know new people every year," she says, describing the atmosphere. The URC Ebbs organises the Aschinger Alm Gaudirace, a mountain time trial on the Friday before the cycling marathon. For many participants, the event serves as a warm-up for the race weekend.
The Kufsteinerland Cycle Marathon offers three route variants. The longest route measures 120 kilometres, the lake circuit 95 kilometres and the panorama circuit 48 kilometres. An e-bike classification completes the programme. The maximum number of participants is 1,500. The event will take place from 21 to 23 August 2026. The main competition will be held on Sunday, 23 August 2026. Information on registration and the supporting programme is available at www.kufsteinerland-radmarathon.at
