The new "rear view" light follows on from the Varia RTL 515/516 and has exciting new functions. In particular, the ability to visualise the overtaking distance of approaching vehicles should increase the feeling of safety for many road cyclists. The radar unit can also differentiate between vehicle sizes. Compared to the old model, the range of the radar has also been increased: instead of 140 metres, other road users are now detected from up to 175 metres.
The information can be displayed on compatible Edge computers, smartwatches or smartphones. According to Garmin, the following devices are required to visualise the overtaking distance and vehicle size: Edge 540/Solar, Edge 550, Edge 840/Solar, Edge 850, Edge 1040/Solar and Edge 1050.
The rear light is StVZO-compliant and should be visible up to a distance of 350 metres. The battery life is specified as a maximum of 16 hours in continuous light mode; when the rear light is switched off, the Varia RearVue should last up to 30 hours. The radar rear light will be available from 6 February at an RRP of 299.90 euros. Compared to the old model (Varia RTL 515/516), this means a surcharge of 100 euros. The top model with integrated camera (Varia RCT716) costs 399.90 euros.
