Race or endurance: which road bike is best suited to competitive racing, mountain passes and long tours? We explain the differences using the competition and marathon models from Canyon, Cube and Rose.

A competition road bike isn’t automatically the best choice for fast riders, nor is an endurance road bike automatically the most comfortable option for everyone. The key factor is, above all, how high and how far forward the handlebars are in relation to the bottom bracket. The geometry determines whether the riding position is low and stretched out or comparatively upright, how stable the bike is when ridden at speed, and how comfortably the riding position can be maintained over several hours.

To determine the correct fit, TOUR uses not only the frame dimensions ‘stack’ and ‘reach’ but also the ‘stack-to-reach’ value, or STR for short. A lower value indicates a stretched-out racing position, whilst a higher value indicates a more upright marathon or endurance position. With integrated cockpits, however, simply looking at the frame is no longer sufficient. That is why TOUR also measures Stack+ and Reach+, i.e. the actual position of the hands on the brake levers in the standard configuration. Race for racing conditions, Endurance for prolonged use

  • Race bikes These usually have a lower stack, a longer reach and, as a result, lower handlebars. They are designed for riders who can maintain a sporty, stretched position for long periods and who want to minimise aerodynamic drag as much as possible when racing, riding in fast groups or at high speeds.
  • Endurance or marathon road bikes They tend to position the handlebars higher and closer to the rider. This takes the strain off the back, neck, shoulders and hands, particularly on long rides and rough roads. They often make for a smoother ride in a straight line and usually allow for wider tyres.
  • The boundaries are blurred. A Cube Agree, for example, positions the rider in a significantly sportier position than a classic endurance bike such as the Cube Attain or the former Rose Reveal. Conversely, a modern Canyon Endurace CFR in its top-of-the-range version can be designed to be so race-oriented that the model name alone reveals little about the actual riding position.

Understanding geometry: stack, reach and the actual grip position

The stack refers to the height of the head tube above the bottom bracket. The greater the stack, the higher the handlebars can be positioned on a bike with a similar frame configuration. The reach refers to the horizontal distance from the bottom bracket to the head tube. A longer reach results in a more stretched riding position.

The STR value expresses the ratio between the two measures:

Competition road bike: For speed and racing ambitions

A competition road bike demands greater agility and core stability from the rider. In return, the low, stretched riding position helps to reduce the frontal area exposed to the wind. More direct handling, high frame stiffness and, in most cases, sporty gear ratios are well suited to criterium races, licensed races, fast training groups and mass-participation races.

True racing bikes aren’t necessarily too uncomfortable for mountain riding. On the contrary: lightweight models are often the obvious choice for long climbs and varied terrain, provided the riding position is right. Cyclists who spend a lot of time riding out of the saddle, frequently tackle long mountain passes and also use their bike for races will benefit from a lightweight, agile frame. On very long days in the Alps or during cycle marathons, however, the lower riding position can become a strain, particularly if mobility is limited.

The Rose Shave FF is the race version of the new Shave platform and replaces the previous Xlite. Rose has clearly fine-tuned the geometry for competition: in frame size M, the Shave FF measures 547 millimetres in stack and 392 millimetres in reach, resulting in an STR of 1.40. By way of comparison: the previous Xlite, in a similar size, had a significantly more moderate STR of 1.45. The Shave FF therefore positions the handlebars noticeably lower and the rider further forward over the bottom bracket.

It is not just the frame dimensions that are crucial for the racing position: the Shave FF features a longer and narrower race cockpit, as well as a seatpost with no offset. This shifts more weight onto the front wheel, resulting in a more aerodynamic position and more direct handling. With a maximum tyre clearance of 35 millimetres, there is still room for modern, slightly wider road bike tyres.

The Shave FF is therefore suitable for cyclists who regularly take part in races, criteriums or fast group rides and can maintain a low grip position steadily over long periods. It may also be suitable for long Alpine stages, provided that the rider’s flexibility, core stability and bike fit are all in order. On the other hand, riders who mainly spend many hours in the saddle and frequently want to relieve pressure on their hands, shoulders or lower back will find the Shave to be the more suitable alternative to the Rose.

The Rose Shave without FF takes over the role of the former Reveal as a long-distance road bike. However, it is no longer a classic, very upright endurance model, but combines a distinctly more relaxed riding position with an aerodynamically optimised frame. In size M, the stack measures 584 millimetres, the reach 378 millimetres, and the STR is 1.54. This means the rider sits significantly more upright than on the Shave FF, but in a more sporty position than on the previous Reveal.

The difference is particularly evident in the cockpit: it is especially clear from the actual handlebar position in the standard configuration. In the M/L size measured by TOUR, the Stack+ on the Shave is 666 millimetres, whilst on the Shave FF it is 630 millimetres. The Shave’s brake levers are therefore positioned around 36 millimetres – just under four centimetres – higher. At the same time, the Reach+ is 23 millimetres shorter, at 572 millimetres instead of 595 millimetres. Consequently, the Shave not only positions the rider higher, but also slightly closer to the handlebars. The slightly shorter and wider cockpit layout, as well as the seatpost with a 14-millimetre offset, support this more upright riding position, which is more centred over the rear wheel.

With up to 36 millimetres of tyre clearance, the Shave also offers more scope for comfort and varying road surfaces than the Shave FF. It is ideal for ambitious touring cyclists, Alpine holidaymakers and cycle marathon riders who prefer a less strenuous riding position on long rides, but aren’t looking for a ponderous road bike.

Conclusion

If you regularly take part in races, are looking for high speeds and can maintain a low riding position with consistent stability, a race bike such as the Cube Litening, Canyon Aeroad or Rose Shave FF is the right choice for you. For climbers, a lightweight race model such as the Canyon Ultimate or the Shave FF is a sensible choice, provided that their flexibility and bike fit are suited to the aggressive geometry.

On the other hand, if you’re focusing on long rides, mountain passes, cycle marathons and varying road surfaces, you should first consider the stack, reach and your actual grip position. An endurance model such as the Cube Attain, Canyon Endurace or Rose Shave offers a more suitable basis for this. The Shave strikes a sporty middle ground: significantly better suited to long distances than the Shave FF, but less upright than the earlier Reveal.

The Cube Agree, on the other hand, is a prime example of why ‘endurance’ should not be equated with ‘upright’. In the Review of the Cube Agree C:62 SLX The STR stands at 1.48. This gives a more athletic and stretched-out riding position than on many marathon bikes, but is less extreme than on a Litening Aero. The new Agree therefore sits closer to a competition model than to a typical endurance bike. For fast laps around the neighbourhood, hilly mass-participation races and riders who only occasionally undertake really long rides, this middle ground can be just the thing.

With the Canyon Endurace, the distinction from the Ultimate was particularly clear for a long time: In the TOUR showdown with the Rose Reveal The Endurace achieved an STR of 1.60 with a stack of 592 millimetres and a reach of 371 millimetres. This translates to a significantly more upright, compact riding position, which makes long days in the saddle easier. Important for buyers: the Endurace CFR tested in 2026 is designed to be significantly more race-oriented than cheaper Endurace versions. Anyone choosing a Canyon for its particularly relaxed riding position should therefore check the specific spec and geometry of their chosen model.

For tours and cycle marathons: Endurance bikes usually have greater reserves

The longer the planned ride, the more important factors such as pressure points, hand position changes, strain on the neck and road conditions become. An endurance road bike usually offers better conditions for this:

  • A higher handlebar height reduces the gap between the saddle and the handlebars.
  • A shorter reach makes it easier to adopt a less stretched posture.
  • Wider tyres can be used on poor-quality tarmac at a lower pressure.
  • A smoother ride helps when concentration and energy start to wane after several hours.
  • Mounting options for small bags or mudguards make the bike more suitable for touring.

That doesn’t mean that every cycle marathon has to be ridden on a comfort-oriented model. Highly fit riders with good flexibility can also cover long distances quickly on competition bikes. For most amateur cyclists, however, it makes more sense to adjust their riding position to suit the longest ride they regularly undertake, rather than the fastest 60-kilometre lap.

For competitions: The racing position must be sustainable

In a race, aerodynamics, acceleration and precise handling are key. A race bike really comes into its own when the rider can maintain a stable position on the brake levers and lower handlebars, even whilst riding at high intensity. This is particularly true for flat races, criteriums, fast group rides and sprints to the finish.

For mountain races, the difference is less clear-cut. Here, a lighter frame, the right gear ratio and tyre choice can carry more weight than a few millimetres more or less in stack height. A sporty endurance bike like the Cube Agree may be a better choice for many amateur races than a deep-profile aero bike, if it allows for a better and more sustainable riding position.

Before buying, you should therefore: check the geometry chart, compare the handlebar position, take it for a test ride and, if necessary, have the bike professionally fitted. The marking on the top tube is just the start.
