- SPD-SLR is Shimano’s new road cycling platform comprising pedals, shoes and cleats, designed with a focus on power transfer and stability.
- The system features a new click-in mechanism and specially designed cleats that ensure a secure connection and allow for comfortable clipping in and out.
- Lightweight, stiff, aerodynamic shoes and weight-optimised pedals are designed for ambitious road cyclists.

More power, more stability: Shimano unveils new SPD-SLR pedals

- Clipless pedals offer better grip and stability, but may initially increase the risk of falling for beginners due to the unfamiliar release mechanism.
- The efficiency benefit stems primarily from the fixed foot position and stiff sole, which reduce strain and rotation in the foot and knee.
- Getting started safely: the release force is minimal; practise whilst standing and on quiet stretches; alternatives include good flat pedals, stiff shoes or magnetic pedals.

Clip-in pedals: Do they really make a difference, or are they just a risk?

- The PW8 brings the sole of the foot as close as 8 mm to the pedal axle, which is biomechanically beneficial for pedalling and power transfer.
- Weighing 105 grams per pedal, the PW8 is one of the lightest road bike pedals and, when paired with the matching Ekoï shoe, forms an innovative system.
- Recessed metal cleats, weighing just 15 g, show hardly any wear and improve walking performance; ten TOUR readers can test the system.

- KEO-compatible road bike pedal with an aerodynamic, carbon-reinforced body, stainless steel platform, adjustable spring tension and rubberised cleats
- Tested over 300 km: easy clipping in and out, good pedalling performance and surprisingly good grip even without cycling shoes
- Initially, one pedal did not reliably return to its starting position, but this improved after a break-in period; price €99.95, weight 287 g

- Common beginner’s mistakes: lack of practice, unclipping too late, attempting to clip in too early, excessive pedal resistance, fear and tension.
- Incorrectly adjusted cleats and ill-fitting or too-tight shoes lead to pain, an unstable riding experience and long-term problems.
- Solutions: practise beforehand, correct cleat position with sufficient float, a relaxed posture, moderate cadence and prioritising stability.

Tips for beginners: Cycling with clipless pedals – what you need to bear in mind

- Clipless pedals make road cycling more efficient and controlled, as the foot is firmly attached to the bike and the pedalling motion becomes smoother.
- The fear of not being able to unclip is widespread, but it quickly subsides with practice on quiet roads and as you get into the swing of things.
- Falling over whilst getting on the bike is often part of the process; it usually has no serious consequences and can help to dispel any uncertainty in a light-hearted way.

Fear of clipless pedals: Here’s why you should overcome it!

- For gravel tours, grip, control and power transfer are crucial; depending on the style, race, adventure or urban set-ups are suitable.
- The gravel shoes mentioned range from affordable entry-level models to stiff carbon race shoes with weather protection and a wide fit.
- Recommended pedals cover SPD/platform combos, lightweight race models with titanium axles and customisable clipless pedals for tough gravel racing.

Gravel biking gadgets: The best 7 shoe models and pedals

- X-One-G is based on a one-sided mechanism, large 650 mm² contact surface, low weight from 240 g/pair and prices from 179 to 299 euros.
- X-Venture combines click and platform side, weighs 380-400 g/pair, costs 49.90-74.90 euros; all pedals will be available in March 2026 with X-Easy-Cleats.

Three new pedals: what the gravel pedals from Look can do

- Safety and breakdown basics such as helmet, lights, tools, pump, repair kit/spare inner tube, first aid kit and lock.
- Additional equipment such as cycling shoes, cycling shorts, jersey, gloves and (sports) glasses significantly increase comfort, control and protection.
- Safety and puncture protection always take priority; in case of pain, the riding position should be professionally checked and adjusted if necessary.

- Author rides gravel bikes with flat pedals out of MTB habit and appreciates safety, freedom of movement and comfort in everyday life.
- Flat pedals on gravel bikes are seen by many in the scene as a break in style, in contrast to common codes and efficiency standards.
- The author questions efficiency arguments and prioritises riding fun, suitability for everyday use and independence from scene rules.
