Sometimes you don’t need a top-of-the-range model, just a pair of bib shorts that perform reliably – whether you’re training, out on a ride or doing a quick spin after work. That’s exactly what the Sportful Pulse Bibshorts are designed for: a classic design, focused on comfort and attractively priced. Our test reveals whether they really do fit as confidently in everyday use as they promise – and where their weaknesses lie.

Topics in this article

With the Pulse Bib Shorts Sportful has launched a classic-style pair of bib shorts with a clear focus on comfort, versatility and good value for money. They are aimed at sporty cyclists looking for a functional pair of bib shorts for regular use.

Fit & Material

The Pulse features a close-fitting, sporty cut. The 4-way stretch fabric ensures that the trousers hug the body neatly without feeling constricting. The result: a secure fit combined with a high degree of freedom of movement.

The leg panels are ergonomically shaped and support the natural pedalling motion. At the same time, the fabric provides gentle compression. It is noticeable that the trouser legs are cut relatively long. Whilst people with long legs are likely to appreciate this cut, the Sportful may not be the right choice for shorter riders.

The shoulder strap design is minimalist and clearly focused on functionality: the lightweight, stretchy mesh is designed to wick away moisture efficiently and provide ventilation. However, the somewhat thin straps may start to dig into the shoulders over time.

Seat cushions & comfort

At the heart of the range is the Bodyfit Pro MD saddle pad – an all-round pad designed for a wide variety of riders and distances. It features a dual-density construction: different foam densities are designed to provide targeted support in the seating area, whilst the surface remains comfortably soft.

In practice, the design doesn’t quite work. The padding is quite thick and is always noticeable whilst driving, but could still offer a little more support.

In terms of style, these trousers have a clean, sporty look – understated, yet modern enough for everyday wear.

In our test, the Sportful trousers proved to be a well-balanced pair, with just a few minor flaws in the details. They fit true to size and, with their comparatively long legs, are aimed primarily at cyclists with longer legs. They’re easy to put on, the fabric feels comfortable against the skin and gives an overall impression of high quality.

There are some drawbacks to the padding: it’s quite bulky, seems a bit clunky at first and is noticeably thicker than usual. Although this impression is put into perspective when seated, the saddle pad remains a constant presence. Another point of criticism is the stiff rubber supports, which, over time, press uncomfortably into the shoulders and noticeably reduce comfort.

The trousers, however, score points for their low-cut crotch, which allows for quick and hassle-free toilet breaks – a clear practical advantage. At the back, a mesh insert between the straps ensures a high-cut, sturdy design, whilst the seams remain discreet throughout.

All in all, the Sportful shorts are best suited to people with long legs and a relatively short torso. However, anyone who is sensitive to pressure from straps or prefers a flatter, more discreet pad will find more suitable alternatives among the products reviewed here.
