Lazer has developed KinetiCore technology to reduce rotational energy in the event of a fall. Similar to the MIPS system, which many manufacturers use in their cycle helmets, it is designed to provide targeted protection against concussion. In years of research and development work, a wide variety of fall scenarios were simulated on the computer. This resulted in countless prototypes. As a result, Lazer presents bicycle helmets with controlled crumple zones that reduce impact energy.
With the system integrated into the helmet, Lazer claims to have found an optimum balance between protection and overall performance. Other systems come with compromises in terms of ventilation, weight and cost.
KinetiCore technology consists of so-called controlled crumple zones, similar to those used in the automotive industry. The crumple zone of the helmets is formed by cone-shaped EPS foam blocks located on the inside of the helmet. The individual elements are designed to give way or break in the event of an impact. As a result, the energy generated during a fall is diverted away from the head.
The airy design on the inside, in combination with the ventilation openings, should lead to good ventilation and therefore greater comfort. According to the manufacturer, implementing the idea of crumple zones has another positive effect: less material is used, meaning fewer resources are consumed. At the same time, less material also means a lower overall weight of the helmet.
The new technology will be on board in selected new Lazer helmet models. Two new helmets were presented in the road bike sector: the Strada KinetiCore and the Vento KinetiCore aero helmet.
Visibility and safety can be increased for both helmets by using the Lazer "Universal LED" LED light.
In 2020, TOUR 26 road bike helmets tested. The results are available here for download for 1.99 euros.
At the same time, we are also giving you a sneak preview of the TOUR issue number 5/2022, as there will be a big helmet test in it. Unfortunately without the new Kineticore helmets from Lazeras these had not yet been published at the time of testing.
